Down or Front firing

Hello,
Can someone explain to me the Ad's and Disadvantages of forward versus down firing subs, also if you have a down firing sub, can you place on it's side and fire forward? Thanks guys. Ps.. my sub is down firing with front port and bottom port....Thoughts???
