There isn't any real advantage unless you're running your subwoofers above 80Hz. I don't think the BIC subs present the best value. I would suggest that you look at another sub by BIC, the Acoustech H100 or perhaps a Cadence Xsub. These are both quality units that will have good output to 25Hz.

You can get the H100, its forward firing.

Its very hard to say whether or not there is a difference, mainly because there is never 2 subs made with the same everything except for driver position.

Some say the down firing subs have a great tactile response due to loading on the floor.

Others say front firing subs excel in music because they sound better in the high bass region.

When my DPS-12 is in movie mode it shakes me like no tomorrow, and its front firing and front ported(slot ported).

I personally think front firing AND front ported subwoofers are the best(or sealed). Subs that send all the bass energy forward. I feel they don't rely on the rear wall as much and they blend and disappear better. But, thats just my opinion.

Placement and tuning will play a far more important role in dialing in your sub compared to front or down firing drivers.

What is your budget? May we suggest some alternatives? The Bic is a fine sub, but if it's over $200, you may be able to do better.

There are many down-firing subs you can lie on the side to become side-firing. Which would then let you compare them being the exact same except for driver orientation. I don't think there's any difference other than dispersion characteristics, and I prefer down-firing.

My thinking is in line with much that I've read here except to say.. I think much of it "generally" depends on the room itself coupled with placement.
