Dolby TrueHD using PS3 and Yamaha RX-V1800 AV Receiver

Hi,

I'm a little upset when I found out that PS3 will never be able to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio (CMIIW). But recently, I've read an article in edepot.com to setup the ps3 so it can pass the audio untouched.

I've tried to change the Audio Output Format (HDMI) from Linear PCM to Bitstream, but I only got "Dolby Digital" written on my Yamaha RX-V1800 display, instead of "Dolby TrueHD". I tested the RX-V1800 in the store with a Pioneer player, which is able to decode Dolby TrueHD, same Blu-ray Disc (Celine Dion's concert), and the RX-V1800 displayed "Dolby TrueHD".

Any clue to enable the Dolby TrueHD?

Thanx.

The Pio must've been bitstreaming. Many players can both bitstream or internally unpack, at the choice of the consumer.

You'll never get the T-HD logo to light up. Big deal. Once T-HD, or MA, or anything is unpacked, its only seen as PCM, and the receiver cannot know what it originally started as.

These codecs MUST be unpacked, the only difference is that with the PS3 it must be done in the player rather than in the receiver. There is no quality difference in unpacking (or "decoding") as its like unzipping a file.

The PS3 can only send the HD codecs via LPCM, not Bitstream. You will have Dolby TrueHD, etc. but it won't light up on your AVR; it will probably just show up as "PCM." You can verify the codec by hitting "Select" during a BD on the PS3 to make sure you are receiving the HD codec.

All good points above but you can see your AVR light up with whatever you want to see, juet rename the devices.

As silly as it seems, I want to see Dolby Digital HD or DTS MA on the front of my AVR. I just went into the set-up and changed the "names" of everything. DVD is now 'Blu-Ray', TV is now 'HD TV', Stereo is now "Def Tech Suck". Anyway, you get the point. Most AVRs will let you do this and most Yamahas will let you set up "scenes" so you could name one Dolby Digital HD and the other DTS MA.

The PS3 can decode TrueHD, and has always been able to, and it recently (several months ago) received a firmware update that allows it to internally decode dts-HD MA. The thing is, the hardware inside the PS3 won't allow it to bitstream the new HD audio codecs, so the best you will get via bitstream is standard dolby digital and dts. To get the new audio codecs, set the output to LPCM, and the PS3 will internally decode it and output it to your receiver and your receiver will show PCM. I have both a PS3 and an RX-V1800 and I can confirm it works fine. Just press select on your PS3 controller when watching a movie and you can see dts-hd ma or Dolby TrueHD on the info bar to confirm that you are getting the desired audio format.

One last question

Hey everyone,

Thank you for all this - I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was going on (and I suggest not calling Sony for such an issue - I have the STR-DH800).

I still have one lingering question though - I set my PS3 to Linear PCM, play the Blu Ray, confirm by the select button that it's outputting a high-def audio signal, but my AVR says it's receiving "LINEAR PCM (48)", which is the same quality as DVD audio (48khz) when it should be 96khz.

Any idea why this is? Am I still getting HD sound?

Thanks!

If your settings are correct then it must be the source. Some 5.1 DTHD's are 48khz.
