This is what I want: Does it exist??

  • Anchor bay ABT-2010
  • THX certification (Select or Ultra)
  • Audyssey Volume & EQ (or equivalent volume leveling & low volume optimizing)

Check out Denon. 4310 & 4810 for instance.

Not sure if they got the THX certs, but who cares, I bet they perform equally well to those that have the certs, assuming they don't have them in the first place.

Why are you concerned with upscaling? You have a good display and a BD player.
How does Onkyo compare to Denon??

The Onkyo 3007 has everything I am looking for, except that it uses HQV Reon-VX instead of the Anchor bay ABT-2010. these two products appear to be the only two on the market at the moment that have full upscaling capability:

I used to have an old pioneer receiver with thx and I liked using those surround modes for cinema watching. Not essential, but if there was competing product to the denon 890 but with THX, I would probably get it. Apparently nothing exists in that same price range...

I think I'm gonna go with the Denon 890 or 990. Deciding if I need the network capability or not...

I can get the 890 for $600 or I can get the 990 for $900.

Is the 990 worth the extra $300???

Yes, see my signature for the display and BD player I have.

Wanted the upscaling for my dvr box and my wii game system.

P.S. the Denon 4810 is not THX cert, you have to shell out over double that price for the 5308 to get THX at Denon. That is why the Onky 3700 for 2200 retail / $1300 discount suddenly starts looking very attractive...

The "common" rule is to pick out an AVR that will power your speakers and has the features you want/need. All the AVRs from the top 3 companies are good. I could care less about THX but I do care about Audessy and a good GUI, so I like Denon.

HQV Reon-VX is a good scaling engine. However, the scaling is only necessary if you have many analog sourced such as VHS, laser disc, or older video game systems that require it. The Blu-ray player you have should be excellent for upscaling DVDs and will probably do a better job than those receivers can do, so what's the point?

I think you should stick with the SR 4003

I see my post came late. Your display will upscale this sources as good as or better than those receivers, there is still no reason to buy a much more expensive receiver than what's been recommended, especially since you have stressed on countless times your budget is stretched since you bought the CM7s. If you won the lottery since then, that's great, get what you want. But you went from a $300 budget up to over $1000 for a receiver.

Yes it is.
fandango is correct, the 4810 is not THX certified. The 4810 is really just an updated version of the 4308. The older 4806 was certified. Denon typically listed almost everything in the 'detailed specification' section but unless you see a check mark the product does not have the listed feature.

I agree the ABT thing is not that important a criteria these days. In fact I think it is better if they don't even bother with the upscaling feature and put the money in something more practical that the owner can actually benefit from, such as a larger power supply, caps, other higher grade audio components etc. The video processor is redundant and I have seen no evidence they do better in converting/upscaling VHS analog signals than probably most TVs. When I watch VHS I know I won't be getting anything near 480 i/p let alone HD, so why bother? When I watch DVD, HDDVD or BD, I am confident my players can do equal or better than any AVR fitted with ABT or REON.

I would say that Marantz has historically had the worst implementation with Audyssey, in the fact that it can't even be applied to bitstream of the advanced codecs. Maybe they finally fixed that with the xx04, but I doubt it.

The only two Marantz with Dyn vol/eq are the 5004 & 6004. Again, make sure to set your players to output PCM if you want to use the techs with Marantz.

Agreed, I'll probably end up getting an refurbished Onkyo in the $500 range.
You really have no business in caring about video processing at this budget in a receiver. I mean, let's get real here, you are looking for the latest and greatest in Audyssey techs, seven THX worthy amp channels, processor, etc, AND A HIGHER END VIDEO PROCESSOR FOR $500? ok.

Just forget VP altogether at the budget. If you still care later, add an outboard VP like this one. If your receiver ever breaks, or you just want to upgrade, you don't have to buy the VP all over again:

http://www.amazon.com/DVDO-EDGE-High-Definition-Video-Processor/dp/B001D4KWXM

Personally, if it was me, and we were to assume that all of us were videophiles, I'd save my pennies to change the TV out to a plasma. I only own a PJ at the moment, but I would never buy any LCD that has been made thus far. That's where your bang for buck will be for video: the display.

OK, are there any good receivers that have volume control and low-volume optimization for around $500?? I would definitely use these a lot.

P.S.
Funny enough I used to own a panasonic V series 50" plasma but my condo gets so much light during the day that it rendered the screen almost unwatchable. I ended up returning the plasma and trading it out for the samsung 85000.

Yes the Samsung looks more artificial, but advantage of that is the color looks much brighter and there is absolutely no problem with high ambient light. I am very happy with it.

Opps, I just pulled that off the 4810 page and assumed it was for the 4810...
P.S. Paradigmdawg - not to labor the point, but I think the list you pasted is just a list of POSSIBLE features on ALL Denons. If you look at the comparison chart, the 4810 clearly is not THX certified... (not that I could give a %^&T, but wouldn't want you to be mislead into thinking it is)
