Does Oppo 970HD convert over component cable?

I am on the verge of buying an Oppo 970HD, but I have one question - my projector is about 20+ feet away from the DVD player rack.

1) Does the Oppo upconvert over component cable?
2) If so - is there a noticeable visual difference?

My projector has a DVI input, but I would have to buy a DVI-HDMI cable to connect it to the Oppo, and I was told that digital signals greater than 15 feet would produce poor signals. Is this truly the case?

If not- is there anyone out there that has an upconverting DVD player using component only cables? I only ask this because I have been told of the degradation in quality of digital cables over 15 feet.

I heard over 50 feet, if you do buy a cable, check out monoprice, you can get 35 feet for less than the price of a 6ft one at a local store. They work great but are a little stiff.

It's my understanding that the Oppo 970 will only convert non-copywrited (like home movies) material over component. It's video output over component, however, is outstanding though not converted.
