I just had the verizon fios tv service installed in my house. I have the Motorola Qip 6416 DVR box and I can't get it to auto switch HD formats. For instance, when I have on NBC HD which broadcasts in 1080i, it displays it in 1080i. But when I change the channel to ESPN HD which is 720p, it doesn't switch formats to 720p, it stays in 1080i. The only way I can get it to change is if I turn the box off, go into the setup menu and manually change it to 720p. But then of course it displays everything in 720p.

I don't know about that box, but does it have an auto select mode in that video output? Or, perhaps a native format? Call the company?

I have the same box and it works fine for two different televisions, one LCD capable of everything and a RPTV capable of 1080i. Both of the televisions are obvious when the resolution changes.

Settings?

Assuming you have a fixed pixel type display, it shouldn't matter much in the greater scheme of things. Your display is going to convert the signal to whatever its native rate is anyway.....7XXp or 1080p whichever.

I have a Comcast cable box and its behavior is exactly the same. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way around it. Since my TV is 720 native, I have set the box to 720p.
