I'm not sure which feature you're looking to get, but I might be able to help. I also have a Yamaha RX-V992 and used it for years. I also thought that it sounded great for movies and horrible for music. I also read a A/V magazine article that stated the same thing. So, you are not alone.
I bought a Pioneer VSX-1015 back in 2005, and it was night and day. The auto EQ that the Pioneer did smoothed out the response of my system, and music was once again a pleasure (and movies sounded a lot better, too). I now own a Pioneer Elite VSX-23, and it performs on the same order as the VSX-1015.
I think that you'll find that getting away from the RX-V992 is solution enough for your problem. Not only was it not that good for music in its own day, today's receivers with auto EQ really make a big difference, IMO.
