IMO MDS does help people properly. Wasn't the BB guy making a huge blanket statement also? Random internet poster or not, I've been helped by MDS before while I've yet to encounter anybody in BB that was useful.

Sounds like I'm ready to start an MDS fan club, doesn't it? There are a few other random internet posters around here that I hold in the same regard.

That's all,
Alex

At least the guy at BB was qualifying it with why he thought it was true. Yes, MDS is generally a helpful guy. Again, I don't mean offense to anyone.

Seriously, I have no life.
... Indeed, why should he believe some random Internet poster on a web site over the guy at BB? At least the guy at BB will look you in the eye and say it. .
So then, looking someone in the eye is more convincing?
While I don't know MDS personally, he does have a history of his postings. I bet that BB person has one at the store and not knowing it, I'd bet on MDS's history being more credible. :D

And, if it turns out as you suspect, it makes no difference, then my story on lights, gleaned for real research, is more important as the component will last for many more actual years, that is if it has the same operating hour lifespan being on or cycled over time.

I can be lazy, and leave mine on for long periods of time.

If you want tangible results try leaving it on for a month, and then try turning it off whenever not in use for a month. I'd imagine the difference will be seen on your hydro bill. Either way I think the answer to the question is moot, there are plenty of guys / gals on this site that have had their equipment for 10+ years and it sitll works fine.

A more likely situation will be that you will suffer a bad case of the upgraditis and buy something new in the next couple of years with your current reciever in good working condition but minus the new baubles you want.

All that said, I'd say turn it off when not in use simply to be energy concious and to save a few cents/dollars on monthly power bills. Be environmentally friendly, cause though the picture on your TV of lush green sceneries is pretty, constantly leaving on any power using source is only contributing to the decay and destruction of it.
