Do I want a receiver or amplifier? (HTPC related/low budget)

I'm in Ottawa, but I travel to Toronto fairly often as my family is there. Any hookups would be nice. I'm in the midst of moving so after I move I will be picking up whatever I find Slow and steady and patience is the key to finding something cheap and awesome
