I'm currently looking at a marantz 7009 refurbished for 700(great deal i believe)I have a 3.1 system and only watch movies. I know I shouldn't get caught up in wattage but I need about 125 per channel.don't really need dolby atmos. User friendly would be nice. Do I need to spend that much? Is there a Yammy for under 500 that can compete. I'm kinda back in HT after about 20 years and a lot has changed. Only reason I'm mentioning the Yammy is because I owned several and never had any problems. It seems like marintz at least back in the day was top notch and seems to have alot of bells and whistles. I actually don't really know what else to add. Just too many options for me to filter through. Thanks.

You need to provide a little more information in order to determine what would work best.
- What size room
- Are you sticking with 3.1 or are you going to expand
- Yamaha are excellent receivers, I am sure you can find one in your price range
- What type of speakers do you have (how efficient are they, rating)
- Since you stated 3.1 I assume you have a sub
- Are you concerned about 4K content pass through?

Any newer receiver is user friendly IMO

How on earth did you determine you "need" 125W per channel? That isn't your speakers' max wattage recommendation, is it? That's not a very useful parameter, try checking out your speakers' impedance and sensitivity ratings for more useful information in selecting suitable amplification. Check your spl needs with something a little more on subject like an spl calculator

How on earth really?? Please don't talk down to me for not being a know it all. I was using the same principle I use on my car audio. Having head room is never a bad thing incase I want to upgrade down the road. I'm running the Chane A2.4 for the LCR. Yes I have a sub. No I'm not concerned about 4k. My room is large. About 800sf.

Car audio and home audio are apples and oranges. Don't take offence to answers when you ask questions. Everyone one here takes time to give free and for the most part very accurate information. just provide all information you can and don't get offended when members know more than you think you do. This place gives great advice , again for free ; so be humble and grateful .

So you mean you should never have plenty of head room when you build home auduo? Everytime you want to upgrade your speakers you should go out and buy another reciever? If that the case sounds pretty stupid. Hey Take some free advice...never settle for just enough. One day you might kick yourself for dishing out more cash because you wanted bigger and better. From what I've seen on these forums people upgrade speakers all the time. I can't afford to buy a new reciever everytime. My budget is limited. From what I've seen for recievers they say 60 or 80 watts of power. But in reality it seems less than that. I NEVER said my speakers needed 125 watts. I needed to buy a reciever that could produce it. That is all. Thanks for all the help.
I think with all that advice I gave I should get paid. Lol. The only time I had to pay for free advice is when I took bad free advice and had to pay more down the road. I appreciate yalls free help I really do!!! Hope everybody has a wonderful day. Another gentleman reached out to me and answered all my questions for me privately. By the way he didn't expect to get paid.

your speakers are rated at 90db 1w/1m so any 100 watt receiver should give you plenty of headroom. in regards to upgrading speakers later, what if you choose a speaker 84db sensitivity then you might need 250 watts to achieve. If you want future proof power get the least expensive avr that has the features you want with preouts and add an external amp for the 3 mains. and FWIW no one hear is looking to get paid, my point was it's usually excellent advice and free is the good part. Have wonderful day too.

My apologies, didn't mean to offend. So how many dB headroom does 125W provide you?
