I just bought my Yamaha 863 and just recieved my new EMP subwoofer. Should I hook this up with anything special in regards to speaker wire or cable? Or does it even matter?

You need a single coax cable with an RCA plug on each end and it is connected from the receiver's sub pre-out to the sub's line input.

No, you don't need anything special. If you pay very much for the wire, you are being cheated. Just use a wire with a single RCA connector on each end, hook it up as MDS says, and you should be fine.

Just to be sure I am on the right page... I do not need normal speaker wire for this thing?

Pyrhho-

I do not even need speaker cable for this thing?! Is using an RCA connection the best method. Also, if I am placing this sub away from my reciever and tv, say up to 10 feet away, do RCA cables lose quality as the cables get longer?

You can get 50 ft. subwoofer cables, which are just 50 ft. rca cables, so don't worry about losing quality.

No, speaker wire would be used for a 'high level' connection which means the signal has already been amplified. The sub would knock it back down to line level, apply the xover and amplify the bass part that it keeps for itself, and then send the rest out the high level outputs. That type of connection would be used if your receiver did not have a sub pre-out; the major disadvantage is the need to run speaker cable from the receiver to the sub and then from the sub to main speakers.

With modern receivers you want to let the receiver do all the bass management as it is the brains of the whole operation (the central switching/processing/amplifying device) and just send the sub an already filtered signal that it does nothing to but amplify.

If you don't want to wait you could go to Best Buy and get a rocketfish sub cable for about 10 bucks. Just a thought :D
