Do I need a receiver upgrade to get surround with my HDTV?

I have a newish 52" plasma HDTV, an HD Directv box and a new PS3 that will be connected after the kids get it for xmas. I'd like to add surround at that time and I have an older sony receiver that supports surround but NOT HDMI. As I understand it, most new setups run inputs to the receiver via HDMI then out to the TV and speakers, but is there a way to output component sound from PS3 to the receiver to power the surround speakers only for when I'm watching movies or gaming? if so, does that mean it won't work with movies coming through Directv? better just to spring for a newer receiver?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Cheers,

The PS3 has optical out as should your DrectTV box. That won't get you the latest and greatest formats, but it will get you surround for sure.
