Do I need 6 interconnect cables hooked up?

I just purchased a new Denon 2910 for my home theater system. As I understand it if I want to listen to DVD-A and SACD I have to buy six analog audio cables and hook them up on the RCA jacks between the DVD Player and the AV Receiver? Please confirm. This has no impact on my optical connection I use for Dolby Digital and DTS on 5.1 system? Please confirm. I am in uncharted territory for myself.

Also, do I need to size speakers (large vs small for DVD-A and SACD)? They are all small on my receiver because I have an excellent sub. But do I need to do the same to the DVD player? I would rather just have my AV receiver do bass management? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Phil

Most likely, yes

Unless your receiver can decode SACD/DVD-Audio you must run the six analog cables from the player to the receiver's analog inputs. Offhand, I can't think of any receivers that can decode these.

As far as your speakers large/small setting, check your owner's manual, if the player allows it, I would use the same settings as the receiver since you seem to be happy with it.

And yes, this does not affect video.

Will it affect my optical audio connection when I play Dolby Digital and DTS encoded DVD's?

Yes, you'll need the 6 analog multichannel connections connected to enjoy DVD-A/SACD.

The settings in the player for bass and time management are applied to the analog outputs only so, YES, you will need to set the speaker sizes AND distances in the player as you deem fit for the multichannel analog connections. For most people, these settings are identical to those used in their receiver.

The receiver's bass and time management settings are only applied to that which is passed into it digitally, via an optical or coax connection. The player's bass and time management settings are NOT applied to the player's digital output. So, NO, the player's settings will NOT affect your optical audio connection when you play DD and DTS DVDs via the optical connection. Bear in mind, however, that you can now decode these DVDs via the multichannel analog connection, too, if you so desire.

You probably WILL be able to adjust the receiver's analog multichannel input level trims at the receiver, but you can also adjust the multichannel analog output level trims at the player. I prefer to leave my player's multichannel level trims set to 0dB and use my receiver's level trims for the multichannel analog inputs to calibrate my multichannel analog connections. YMMV.

You're correct, Phil. For full bass managment features available from the 2910, you will need a set of analog cables from the multichannel out on the Denon to the multichannel in on the Yamaha. These will have no bearing on your optical connection from the Denon to the Yamaha.

According to the Audioholic's review here, the 2910 has "Bass Management available for all formats on the HDMI output (except SACD)", this would lead me to believe the analog cables would be required for full multichannel format compatibility. You may want to check out this review for further details on this player if you haven't yet.

In regards to your speaker size question, the settings you've defined in the receiver won't apply to the multichannel settings, this is handled as part of the bass management features of the 2910. Because of the nature of the pure analog signal, the receiver cannot do bass management and this needs to be configured in the BM portion of the Denon. You would configure your speakers much in the same manner in the BM section of the Denon as you have in the Yamaha's speaker configuration... -TD

Thanks. I appreciate. I wasn't sure what to do.
