Latest CR issue

Consumer Reports just came out with a new issue on all the new formats. They took a survey of owers who have had issues with all the different types of displays, and by far the worst were rear projection TVs using CRTs (over conventional tube and flat panel), and "microdisplays using LCD, DLP, or LCos technology have been even more repair-prone than CRT-based projection sets during the first year of operation."

CR also stated "Toshiba DLP sets have been less repair-prone than most; JVC LCoS sets (D-ILA)...have been more repair-prone...The company has said it will repair faulty sets at no cost to the user."

"There were no repair issues during the first year of use for LCD flat panels from Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Toshiba, and for Panasonic and Sony plasma sets."

Page 29 gives some nice info on brand quality and reliability from 117,000 TV's from CR subscribers.

My wife and I spent some time at our local home theater store if front of some of the most expensive projectors made and my wife and I both suffered from headaches after about 20 minutes of viewing. I actually get motion sickness if I try to watch and walk at the same time. I viewed Runco's, Mitsu, Sony, NEC, etc. and no matter the color cell count or the rotation speed, we were still affected.

It was a shame because I really wanted the better black levels and contrast of the DLP technology but I am very happy with the PQ of the Panasonic. I hear the 900u is even better in this area!
I've been hearing about RBE, but never really sat in front of a DLP set -- until this weekend when i went to pick out a new TV. I didn't see any rainbows, but it did give me a headache after about 5 minutes. It's a shame too, because on color quality, the DLP sets looked much better than their LCD counterpart. Ironically our DLP projector at work gives me no such issues, could be a higher quality, or the fact that i'm not watching FMV on it.

So i ended up coming home with a Sony LCD RPTV. The picture isn't as good, but i can watch it without my eyes going batty.
