I was thinking of doing an experiment. Would i get deeper bass if i took the active & passive drivers from my subs, built a box for them & reassembled them with amp into a more inert/larger volume enclosure???

Ive always wanted to build a sub & thought maybe starting with this idea to get my feet wet with the whole process. Im thinking 14" cubed subs i have a pretty small & maybe going 18" cubed & buit like tanks.

Thoughts??

By "active" & "passive" drivers- are you referring to a woofer and passive radiator?

Do you really think the manufacturer didn't do their own testing? They offered the warranty and if the box was wrong, it could seriously risk damage to the woofer and that would cost them a lot of money.

The Thiel-Small parameters will determine how deep it will go- do you have box design software? If not, try WinISD (free download)- it will show the predicted response for a given driver with varying box internal volume.

Yes one is an actual driver the other a PR.

I do understand that the company did their homework & designed the box accordingly. However, their aim may have been to make the enclosure as small as possible to please the masses. Thats kinda how it was advertised, "small". I was also thinking of ordering another PR & trying an enclosure with 2 PRs & 1 Driver. If i really try hard i am able to get a small popping sound from the PR but only when driven extremely loud. However when this happens i notice that the driver is still well within its limits. So my thought was to try adding a second PR, or a larger enclosure or both. I am not going to modify the enclosure just build another one so if all else fails i can reassemble back to original.
Like i mentioned, its more for the fun of the build if anything. If i gain some output or extension then sweet. My question is, is the possibility of improvement over the manufactured box?
Do some companies sacrifice proformance for convenience/WAF? Id hope not but common sense would hint otherwise.
Thanks!!

They do just that, however they design the woofer to work with that sized box.

You won't know if you can improve the performance of the driver with a different enclosure until you measure the T/S parameters of the driver and model it.

I suspect the box you have is optimal.

It is possible you might gain bass extension with a larger box. However that will probably come with the penalty of a big loss of output.

You just can't pull box size, number and spec of PRs out of the air. If you do you will have a total mess.

Before doing anything you must model with accurate data, other wide you will waste time and money.
