How can a company give you something for free that you have curently been paying $10/month for and at the same time make you mad?

"Here is the quote from Dish Network: “PlatinumHD Add-On No Longer Available – Effective August 1, 2009, the $10.00/mo. PlatinumHD add-on package will no longer be offered to new or existing customers upgrading to HD. Existing customers subscribing to the PlatinumHD add-on through July 31, 2009 may continue to receive the PlatinumHD add-on package until they elect to change their programming.”

Meaning that customers that are currently paying for the $10/mo add on will continue to be charged for it. It is rumored that if you pay for this and call to complain that they will take the fee off your bill. There are some other odd conditions added based upon the package you choose as well."

Directv, did almost the same crap but just a different way. We used to get "x" amount of HD channels for my 10.00/month, then Directv one day took away some of the most popular HD channels and forced it's customers to pay a 5.00/added HD channel fee to get those channels back. Naturally customers complained and said "WTF?" well Directvs response was, the channels they took away were a "present" to it's customers and we got them free with our subscribtion to HD. I asked why they didn't pick channels that nobody cared about in HD (like Food channel or some other crappy channels) and was told, the channels were picked at random, my response was, "oh yeah, they just happened to pick the most popular HD channels at random and then decide to charge us for them.

I swear the cable and sat companies have us all by the short and curlies. heck I recall a time when you paid for channels, so you wouldnt get commercials. :(

Yep, and if you read the fine print, you'll see they can do anything they want to you...whenever they want to do it. That free HD was a benefit to those signing up during a specified time period, btw, Warp.

When I signed up, we were told that we could upgrade one of our receivers every 6 months, free of charge. So after 6 months, we upgraded a standard receiver to a DVR. They charged us, but after 3 phone calls, they took the charge off. They were supposed to send a "recovery kit" for us to send them back the old receiver (or you get charged big bucks). It took another 3 calls and 3 months to get that kit.

Then after 6 more months passed, I called to ask for another upgrade...a standard to an HD receiver upgrade. "Sorry...we no longer provide that benefit." Benefit? That was part of your sales agreement that caused me to bolt from Dishnet. Repeat..."Sorry, we no longer provide that benefit." I took this one all the way to the district director. The best he would do, grudgingly is charge us "only" $50. So we did that. And yep, they would send out a "recovery kit" immediately. "We promise." After 4 months, I called to ask where my promised kit was. "Oh, we don't need that back. You won't be getting a recovery kit." (I feel like I'm being set up with this little maneuver. So I'm keeping the useless bugger until we drop DirecTV, just in case.)

The thing is, we got this kind of crappola from Dishnet, too, and worse from that evil entity called Charter Cable. I hate being a captive audience to these thieves.

I agree..... they always have the loopholes in the contract you have to sign or you don't get service...

I am lucky enough to say, that when I signed up 2 years ago that I got 2 DVR's and Platinum service and haven't had any surprise increases or problems. 1 of my receivers took a dump and they had a new one out right away...

Thankfully I have been trouble free with Dish... Never say never though...
