I just bought a Samsung LN40A550 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

I want to disable the audio from the TV, so I can connect it to a receiver. I have an optical on the audio out of the TV going into the audio in in my receiver and out into the set of speakers than I bought. I"ve been trying to mess around with it, but I can't seem to control the volume of my receiver with the TV remote. Then I came across this:

I found this on another website. Is this related to my problem?

I have the LN40A550 40" LCD HDTV, which I currently have configured with the built in speakers turned off. I am using the analog RCA outputs of the LN40A550 to feed an input on my Yamaha stereo receiver. When I press the mute or volume buttons on the remote for the LN40A550, a "Not Available" warning graphic comes up on the screen.

Is it possible to configure the mute and/or volume functions on the remote to control the RCA audio outputs? I have tried a number of different configurations on the LN40A550's audio settings and I can't find a way to accomplish this. Help! I want to be able to mute the obnoxiously loud commercials without using a separate remote!

vampidemic,

The internal mute is for the television speakers only. The RCA feed is live - always - and is not controlled by the volume. The best way to mute, in your case the commercials, is by muting the amp/receiver that is controling the sound.

The mode not supported is showing up because you've already muted the internal speakers, and you can't mute the volume AND the internal speakers at the same time. The television sees that command as redundant and displays the message for that reason.

if you are using cable/sat/dvd ect run the digital audio fed to the avr. If you stll want the option of using the tv speakers also send the analog feeds to the tv.

many times running the audio out of the tv via optical cable will only get you stereo through the receiver, unless you are getting your tv via over the air anteanna, then you can get true 5.1. Just run the optical from the source device into the receiver.

So it just happens my receiver and my TV are both Samsungs, and there's this thing called Anynet+ so they can work together. I have a Samsung HT-Z320 receiver. It's also a DVD player. When I use it as a DVD player, I get all 5.1 surround sound. When I watch TV or play with my xbox 360, I only get 2.1 because instead of using HDMI, it uses the optical cable for some reason. I can't find the option of using the HDMI for audio on the TV and xbox 360.
