What type of speaker would be best for 50/50 music and movies?

Mirage from API makes an excellent OMNI-Polar speaker line called the OM Series. I have the OM-5 and it works great for my application. You will need a larger room and a healthy amp of 200+ watts RMS.

Sorry my mistake. What I wanted to ask is, Which are better, dipole/bipole speakers or direct rad. speakers, for a system that will be used for music 50% and movies 50%? I know that dipole speakers are intended more for movies, but will they sound really bad or not work well with DVD-Audio, SACD's?

I chose Dipole speakers for my rear surrounds, rather than direct speakers, as is usually recommended, due to space and WAF. I selected the Paradigm Studio Reference Version 3 - ADP-470, which matches my Paradigm 100 mains, and ADP-470CC Center Channel. I think they sound great, although I run the levels on the dipoles a bit hotter than my Radio Shack meter indicates is requred, because I think it sounds better. (Not direct sound, but reflected...)

Bottom line, they sound good, and should be acceptable. Go listen and decide what's best for you...

I presume you mean the main front speakers. All electrostatics and planar magnetics are dipolar. Mirage makes bi-polar speakers. There are probably other manufacturers. I converted to panels (Magneplaners) 25 years ago. I still have panels (electrostatics). I like panels better than boxes. I have converted 3 audio buddies in the last five years. You should go somewhere and give them a listen. If you are in the Phila. area I or one of my buddies would be more than happy to give a demo.
