Dipole Surrounds as room speakers?

So I'm out at Ebay and AudiogoN hunting for some in-ceiling / in-wall speakers for putting in places like the kitchen and patio. Obviously, imaging isn't the most important factor here; and in fact I'd like to avoid setting up a "sweet spot". I'm after as good a sound as evenly throughout the area as possible.

So I'm looking for opinions on using dipole surrounds for filling the room with music. My thinking is that, since they deliberately project toward walls, they will create a more even sound.

OTOH they might sound awful. Since I am still using direct speakers for my own surround system, I don't have any to experiment with.

Input?

That is a bad idea. Dipole speakers are deigned to have a null on axis. Actually I think the whole concept of dipoles even for surrounds is spurious.
My surrounds are very smooth and you never localize to them no matter what the seating position. They throw good imaging laterally between them and the mains, on well mixed and balanced program.

Anyhow I certainly counsel against proceeding with your plan.

Dipoles may not work as well as bipoles. There are also single stereo speakers available.
