My mom is dropping DirectV and wants to still record on the network channels. She would like a box that will record two shows at once. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Recording two shows at once with one unit isn't as common as recording one, as you probably know. It might be less expensive to just get two single-channel recorders. For those, you have some options, and here are the ones that come to mind:
  • Use a TV tuner on a computer - I do this on my PC and previously did it on my MacBook
  • Get an over-the-air tuner and DVR that will record in high definition, such as the Channel Master TV that costs about $400
  • Get an over-the-air tuner and DVR that will record in standard definition and upconvert the video output to 1080p, such as the Magnavox MDR-513H/F7 that costs $200. The Magnavox can also burn and play DVDs
