Digital output of a Pioneer 444-S

I have a Pioneer 444-S DVD reader, and I would like to know what is the digital output format it delivers on its SP/DIF connector when used with a DVD-AUDIO (I say DVD-Audio and not DVD-video).

I have read that many readers do not deliver the high resolution 24bits/96kHz digital flow (because of the manufacturers' concern with the digital right management), but I have also read that most of the Pioneer palyers deliver a true 24bits/96kHz flow on their digital SP/DIF output.

The goal is to use this SP/DIF to feed a separate high-end D/A converter having 24/96 capability being part of a stereo high resolution system.

Thanks for your reply,
M.

The digital out on a dvd player can deliver s/pdif or pcm data. It cannot pass the multi-channel tracks of a dvd-audio disc (they are PCM but compressed using Meridian Lossless Packing).

There will be no problem passing 24/96 PCM data either to a receiver/pre-pro or external dac but if you want to play the MLP tracks, you must use the 5.1 analog connections.
