When I first started thinking about redoing all my stuff I had to decide on the reasonable approach or just saying the hell with it and buying the high end stuff I really want. When I first started thinking about dropping $25-$30K on new equipment, my mind was on Krell, Classe, Meridian, Mcintosh, Lexicon, etc. Denon never even entered my mind as a brand I would put into that category. If they want to sell $7K equipement, they at least ought to make it look different than one of their $300 receivers.

My question to you would be what did you end up buying,if you had to decide on what approach you were taking i can gaurantee you that you were never part of the target buyer.

The type buyer targeted by Denon dont price shop, they walk into a store (or call) & have the best stuff set up in their home, most of the time when they are not even home, also Denon's target buyer would be buyers of an age that they are old enough to remember when Denon was know as an elite brand, not an affordable brand.

I would LOVE to have that Denon pre/pro. It's the Godzilla of the pre/pro market today. Japan has let loose a monster. It will do more than most of us can even think about trying to implement into our homes.

I'd boot my B&K pre/pro out the door to make room for that beast.

Wow, so you guys really need a "prestige" name badge for it to be worth the money?

No one would bat an eye if these components said McIntosh. "But that's a prestigious brand!"

Geez. Give me a break.

Can't afford the Denon. With the way technology changing yearly, I don't see why anyone would spend that kind of money.

This is more my cup of tea.

Denon always thought of themselves as an elitest brand for one dumb reason or another. For that much money, I would not even give them a glance.

I'll stick to something like NAD, Anthem, Bryston.

Denon is a just a 3 dressed up as a 9. They are no better or no more robust than Yamaha.
Pretty harsh words for a product you've never even seen.

I don't need to see them. Every Audio shop I've ever been in who sold both Yamaha and Denon always cost up to $500 more for the Denon than the equivalent (in terms of power and features) Yamaha model. I fail to see the logic in that as Denon is comparable to Yamaha. Now they come up with seperates priced in the leagues of Anthem, Bryston, NAD, Symaudio products?? No thanks.

I'm not saying Denon is a bad product. I'm saying they are just asking way too much for their product. At least here in Canada anyway.

What's the difference between the $7,000 Denon pre-pros and the much cheaper Denon 4308 receiver?

I'm not trying to say that anyone of us is wrong for the way we think. Different strokes for different folks. There is no question that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US would be extremely happy to own this $14,000 Denon combo.

But...

If someone offered you a free $50K Lexus or $50K Toyota, you would take the Toyota?

If someone offered you a free $14K Denon or a $14K Krell, you would take the Denon?

Just out of curiosity, that's all.:D

That's a bad example. Lexus is Toyota's high-end brand. Denon doesn't have its own high-end brand.

A better example would be:

"If someone offered you a $50K Lexus or a $50K Chevrolet, would you take the Chevrolet?"

The answer to the question is "Yes, if the Chevrolet is a better vehicle."

If someone offered you a free $14K Denon or a $14K Krell, you would take the Denon?

Yes, if the Denon separates are better than the Krell separates.

The "prestige" of the brand name shouldn't matter. I'm surprised it matters to so many people here. I thought Audioholics was all about actual performance, not snake oil or "prestige" badges.
