WTH were they thinking? Haven't they been paying the slightest bit of attention to whats going on in the marketplace.

More & more companies are starting sell budget concience separates that people can actually afford to buy! Especially online companies such as Outlaw & Emotiva. I'm sure others will spring up as well.

For that much money, wouldn't you want something like Lexicon, McIntosh, Anthem, Meridian, Krell, Rotel, or even Sunfire?

And maybe you might want something that actually LOOKS like a separate Pre-pros, instead of looking almost exactly like another Denon Receiver?

I agree! While I like Denon products and own five already that price range gets me into McIntosh gear that will have a much better resale value. FWIW Denon has made some excellent separates products in the past and some were very expensive and still command high prices. I have a more reasonablly priced POA-2800 2x200 wpc amp I use to power the front speakers in my HT and it's a solid beast that is very well made.

In regard to Denon's current offering of seperates, I think college students in basket ball stadiums say it best:

"OVER RATED...DUD DUD, DUN DUN DUN"

Everyone seems so fixated on power ratings. This amp weighs over 132lbs! It is very conservatively rated and is bridgeable down to 2 ohms stable! I suspect it will pump out nearly 500wpc into 4 ohms and even more bridged.

As for pre/pro, Denon flagships have for the past few years been state of the art and class leading is so many ways. I would take this pre/pro over any of the brands in this list not just b/c it has the most advanced room correction system on the market, not just b/c it has the most sophisticated bass management system out there, but because the engineering that Denon does to ensure it operates flawlessly and sounds as good as it measures. Don't forget it also does multi zone surround sound just like the venerable AVR-5805 which to date is still IMO the BEST A/V receiver ever made!

As for looks and price, I agree, they are pretty insane but so is most of the high end A/V stuff. If you swap the name out and put McIntosh, nobody would question the price. Unreal.

I agree with you to some extent. However, I just don't see how this product is $8800 more than the 5308. I mean the 5308 has the most advanced room correction system on the market, has the most sophisticated bass management system out there, and is engineered to ensure it operates flawlessly and sounds as good as it measures. So what is my extra $8800 buying me? As far as I can tell, a bit more robust amplifiers, and three more channels. I don't get their pricing on this one.

I'm not trying to attack you. I just don't get it. If there is something I am missing or don't understand, I welcome the education.

Does it make sense to buy separates anymore? They seem to be lagging behind technology wise. In particular, I am not sure why some one would buy $2000 worth of separates instead of a Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, or Marantz.

Those prices don't get anywhere near insane, but they are higher than one is used to seeing for something with the word "Denon" on it. This is why Toyota invented Lexus and why Nissan invented Infiniti, and to a degree Pioneer and Sony have done the same thing with their Elite®©™ and ES®©™ branding.

I'm not questioning McIntosh prices either. Nor would I buy any of their stuff at the prices they sell at either! I personally think they are ugly, I don't care how well built they are or how much "prestige" the name has.

Denon doesn't even come close to having that kind of "prestige" so for them to charge that kind of money is just crazy.

I wouldn't call those the new Denon seperates. I would call those the new Denon seperate Flagship vanity offerings. And I think TA is right, these are state of the art units with the finest tech saavy that Japan can offer. I like my little YBA/Audio Refinement prepro just fine, thank you verrrry much.
Perhaps these are precursors to a unit that will compete with the Integra everyone talks about so much...........

How about $1600.00 for 2 Emotiva XPA-5's at 200watts x 10......

I think Denon is reaching here, and they are headed in the wrong direction in my opinon... there are many products coming up soon that are shooting for less money for more product....

XPA-2: 75lbs x 5 = 375lbs =1000wpc @ 4 ohms = $4,000
Denon: 132lbs = 500wpc @ 4 ohms = $7,000

Denon is great, but come on, Gene, most people would not choose Denon over Krell, Lexicon, Meridian, or Anthem. Denon may sound just as great. But when people spend $14,000, sound quality is not the only issue. People want that name prestige like Krell, Lexicon, Meridian, or Anthem.

It's kinda odd to see guy's discussing how Denon went wrong,Denon is extremely well versed in luxury audio & has re targeted a select group that they once had a large share of,i'd be willing to bet that the new line of seperates is a huge success for them,let's not forget that Denon used to rule luxury audio right along with the other big luxury names,Denon was a luxury brand much longer than it has been a consumer brand.

People who are interested in buying TOTL seperates will never even think about Emotiva,Sunfire Ect or any of the other brands being compared here,Denon has targeted the LUXURY buyer,not the pratical buyer,two different animal's.

HUH,high end luxury audio buyers are screaming at the top of their lungs daily that they want products exactly like Denon has just put on the market,other big luxury brands like Mcintosh are not filling the needs of the hi end HT crowd.

I'd say Denon is the only one paying attention to what the luxury HT buyer wants.

the only selling points of the denon amp here are: (IMO)

1) matching denon looks (if you have a denon receiver/pre-pro)
2) those analog meters are nice
3) 10 channels in one box
