Denon x4000 protection circuit tripping?

I have a new Denon x4000 AVR which seems to be tripping the protection circuit relatively frequently. I hadn't noticed it before tonight but my kids tell me it has been happening when they play xBox once in a while as well. I'm curious because it happened multiple times tonight, but we weren't listening at loud volumes and the receiver didn't feel particularly warm to the touch. I'm driving Aperion Verus Grand Bookshelves and Center, and their Intimus Bipoles for surrounds along with an HSU VTF-2 for the sub. All my speakers are connected via banana plugs, so I shouldn't have any stray wires touching, but I double-checked just to be sure. The Verus Grands are rated as 6 ohm speakers, but I wouldn't think the Denon would have any trouble with these.

Any ideas before I send it off to Denon? I doubt I need a separate amp just to drive these speakers at normal volumes, but could that be the problem? Not sure what else to check but open to any ideas. Currently, I have it unplugged from the wall and hoping the magic fairies fix it before morning....

Thanks!

I would think that almost certainly you have a defective receiver. I would return it.

It is just possible the receiver does not like those speakers. Rated impedance of a speaker means virtually nothing in practice.

With cheaper amps, and for all but the highest cost receivers, the amps are cheap, there is the possibility of an output stage not liking a particular speaker.

As you move up the food chain of power amps, you have a greater probability, that an amp will be stable under all loads. However I can tell you that only the most intelligently designed amps are truly stable with all loads.

I would return it, the protection circuit is probably defective/out of calibration if it trips even at low volume (by the way, how low, like -20?). I have never experienced any protection trips with all the AVRs I have had so far, not even the smallest 20 lbs Denon AVR-1705 though I typically have the volume at below -15.

What's strange is that I've had it for a month and watched plenty of movies on it without a problem. Last night we were watching Jaws on DVD (not even BluRay!) and that's when it went nuts. The volume was right around 50-56 (the new Denon's go 0-100 instead of starting in negative territory)

Re-check your connections. One time it was a loose speaker wire that came out and it was causing me the same thing.

Try 2.1 mode only (Stereo mode). See if it still trips.

My Denon 3312 can drive my 802D2 and Phil3 without any kind of problems at all @ 90dB+ in both 2.0 Pure Direct & 2.1 Stereo modes.

Perhaps it's worth trying a factory reset

Both good suggestions. I'm out of town for the next 2 weeks but will give them a try when I get home.

Definitely re-check all connections for frayed wires or poor connections. The area behind receivers tends to be quite cramped and its easy to have wires touching.

FYI, according to the manual, page 155, you can choose between volume display from:

0 to 98

or

-79.5 to 18.0

default is 0 to 98.

Anyway, 50 - 56 would be equivalent to -29.5 to -23.5. At that volume the protective circuit should not be activated, not even if your speaker impedance drops to 2 ohms. If after a processor reset and rechecked all the connections are fine, free from shorts, then you should send it back and ask for an exchange.
