Denon X3800h vs X4800h?

Hey everyone, just curious about these two models and their differences. Obviously power is one, but I'm not sure if it's enough to make much difference? Last generation at least the 4700 got Auro while the 3800 didn't. But this year they both seem to have everything same same. Was really hoping it'd process 13 this year. Am I missing something, or what is the benefit for stepping up to the 4800? (I think the 3x00 is always the value king, but not necessarily looking for value. Just the differences to see if it's worth it in my mind)

The X4800H offers more connections and, if following last model, will offer an advanced remote controller with universal remote control functions. Other differences will be available for comparison in the manuals.

Thanks for the reply! That's at least something. On Denon's site it also looks like it has listed clock jitter reducer, and alpha processing, while the 3800 doesn't. Do you have an idea of what those actually do?

As to the power making a big difference....not so much. Difference is 20 wpc, which is less than 1 dB. I wouldn't put a lot into the marketing of the jitter reducer or alpha processing (that same as AL in previous models?.....p.s. yes it is).

Hi everyone! First post here. ;)

I was also curious about the differences. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I've come up with thus far:

X4800 vs X3800
  • Made in Japan vs Vietnam
  • 7 HDMI inputs as opposed to 6
  • metal front panel vs plastic panel
  • 29.1 lbs vs 27.6 lbs (larger transformer on X4800H)
  • 125W @ 8ohms 2 channels driven vs 105W
  • 2 line FLD front display vs 1 line
  • 32 bit D.D.S.C. Digital, Clock Jitter Reducer, and AL32 multichannel processing on the X4800H
  • 3 12v DC trigger outputs vs 1
  • monolithic amp design on X4800H (top image)

I'm in the same boat on deciding. I've got a 4300 now so it'd be nice to have a lateral upgrade to the newer model, but that 20w doesn't interest me and neither do the extra HDMI ports. This will be for my theater so I've only really got one, maybe two sources at most. Only one monitor out needed as well.

They both have the same Dirac and Audyssey features so I'm covered there as well.

I'll probably check out the manuals to see if there are any features that the 4800 has that the 3800 doesn't that I actually care about, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Check out the name of the forum we post on and buy the 4800. :)

The X3800H uses cheap soundbar standard DACs made by TI, which explains the very poor SINAD results compared to the X3700H:

I'd wait for the X4800H, which is expected to have high-quality ESS DACs, similar to the X6700H.

The 4800 has the same dac chip.

What particular chip is it? Cheap soundbars, eh?

Ok, explain how you get cheap DAC as the reason for the numbers in the review.

Does the 2021 batch AVR-X3700H model which I bought in June of last year have the same chip as I had read somewhere it didn't use the original AKM chip?
The last five digits of its SN are 73157.
In my case, as in its preamp mode the outputs will never reach close to 1 volt, am I right in saying that it's performance should not affect its SQ?

I don’t understand what the concern is with any of the DAC in terms of actual SQ performance.

I understand if people want THD+N of 0.001% or 0.0001%, instead of 0.004%.

The heart wants what the heart wants. :D

But nobody is going to hear the difference.

Talking about AUDIBLE performance with all these extremely low THD+N is like talking about how all amps have a sound signature of their own. :D

Is THD+N of 0.004% considered poor SINAD results?

I think the THD+N numbers are something like:
X3700= 0.001% THD+N
X3800= 0.004% THD+N
RX-A3080 = 0.008% THD+N
RX-A6A = 0.002% THD+N

How can anyone hear THD+N < 0.01% ?
