Denon warranty issue?

I purchased my 4806 in Feb. '06, so officially, I guess it's out of it's 12 month warranty period. For some reason I thought I bought it last August, but the receipt states otherwise. Anyway, here's the rub:

When I had my system installed, we used high end HDMI cables on everything we could. Later, for some odd reason, everything stopped working. I had the tech from the store i purchased the Denon from come over and check everything out. This was around 6 months ago. He was not the original installer, but everything worked fine until it...well, stopped working.

The tech from the store removed all the HDMI cables and switched everything to component. He told me that the component was better anyway. At the time, I didn't have the knowledge to argue with him. Anyway, as long as it worked, I could have cared less. He never mentioned anything about why he switched the HDMI cables.

A few weeks ago, I got curious and reconnected the HDMI, again, it did not work, so I called Denon. The tech there said that he was aware of an issue dealing with HDMI problems and that I could not repair it, that a bench repair must be made by the factory or an authorized tech.

When I returned the Denon a couple of weeks ago to the store for repair , I just assumed they would send it back to Denon and it would be covered. They called me back and told me I had to pay $60 up front just to have the repair company look at it. I balked and said it should be covered since they noticed that the HDMI didn't work 6 months ago when they changed all the cables out. He said he didn't recall that. How convenient.

I don't mind paying for the repair if it's not too expensive, but it seems to me like this should be covered even though the official warranty period has expired.

Should I contact Denon or just pay for the repairs?

Tab, if I were you, I'd contact Denon and inform them of the situation. It might not make any difference, but you never know unless you try. It certainly shouldn't hurt the situation. In my opinion, they should know if one of their authorized dealers pulled something like that.

I'd at least contact Denon and see what they say. You never know. It's worth a shot. Either way, I'd get it fixed even if you have to pay for all of it.

Contact Denon. Based on what you said, this sounds like a design defect, i.e., it is common to many Denons, so it should be covered even if the warranty has expired.

When everything stopped working the first time, did the tech explain why?

I never really thought to ask. He just told me component was better.

Actually, running my Sim via HDMI for the first time is like having a new projector. I had to adjust the brightness, sharpness and contrast down to factory default levels. It's awesome.

I'll call Denon Monday.
