Friends;

I am sorry to inform my review of the new Denon Separates will be delay. I found too many operational bugs with my review sample of the Pre/Pro and had to send it back. I am not sure when I will be receiving a replacement but will update when I have the info.

In the meantime, I am digging this new hulking 10CH power amp while I wait it out :D

So can you break the review into 2 parts, one for the processor and one for the amp section?

I really would like to hear what you think of the amp, for stereo as well as for HT.

Did Denon apologize and say that they will also send you the AVR-5308CI to make up for this disaster?:D

Yes I will likely do this. I really like the amp, it sounds fabulous. I haven't even measured it yet but I suspect it will do very well.

They sent a 5308CI to Clint and I will bench test it for him in a few weeks. They didn't offer any resolution about the processor, in fact it was like pulling teeth to get any tech support regarding the issues I found. I am hopeful the next sample I receive won't be so dysfunctional. This has been a colassal waste of my time which irritates me b/c I have so little of it to dedicate towards product reviews these days

Not sure I haven't really bugged Emo to send it to me just yet. I am up to my armpits in amps with no processors :(

I finished bench testing this receiver and sent the report to Clint to add to his review. The ball is in his court now :)

I wish I had that many amps to play with!:D

Looking forward to the review.

So is it still worth buying (eventually)?

Gene,

From your responses I gather two things. I had been hoping to acquire the Denon separates but now I wonder.

The first is that the pre/pro is buggy. Are the bugs showstoppers? And also, do none of these bugs affect the power amp since the two talk to each other?

The second more critical issue I sense is that Denon's support is still bad. I read Jeff Talmadge's interview where he assured us that support is now much much better. This customer support is my main issue with spending a bundle on them. Do you think your case was particular because I guess you were asking deep questions(I presume)?

For so much money I do not expect bugs in the system, but if they occur I would very much expect red-carpet treatment.

Until I get a second sample, I cannot confirm if the bugs were limited only to a defective sample they initially sent me. I would assume I got a run of bad luck as the unit was essentially non operational.

I did find an interesting issue in volume control scaling NOT limited to this pre/pro but virtually any new processor on the market that does THX processing, Audyssey room EQ, multi channel downmixing, etc. I have some ideas on a workaround and will write it up in the review. Essentially I mimmicked the problems people were having with Onkyo receivers and Audyssey not allowing them to max out the volume control. This has to do with the volume IC's not keeping up with the dynamic requirements of todays processors. More on this later.

As for Denon support, I only deal with 1 or 2 people both of which are extremely stretched in their duties and dedicated to what they do. Since they always travel, its difficult for me to get ahold of them. I never tried calling Denon tech support so I cannot comment on that.

I did however send back my 5805 for mkii upgrade and they did a turn around in less than 10 days which really impressed me!

Sorry to hear that your review sample was pretty much non operational.:( Hopefully the next one you get will be fine. I have been using mine for a while now and it has performed flawlessly.:) Each and every thing I have tried works great! 2 channel, multi-channel, HDMI, all analog and digital, music streaming, etc. I am very impressed with the Denon AVP.

I strongly believe that the one you got was defective, as every Denon AVP owner I know of is extremely happy with theirs. Here's hoping the next one you get is a winner!:)

Oh, please, please, please, Gene, please give us the same bench testing as you did on the Yamaha Z11 because I'm sure the Denon 5308 will be judged heavily against the Yamaha Z11 and the AVP-A1HD when you get a new one:

1) Crosstalk 20 Hz - 20 kHz
2) Frequency Response Deviation
3) THD + N
4) SNR
5) Power Output
6) Lots of Graphs:D

I'm sure it will subjectively sound fantastic just like the Z11, but how does the Denon 5308 really compare on the actual measured specs?

I would love to get your impression on the differences between the 5805 MK2 and the new 5308CI in terms of specs and sound quality!

One thing I don't understand is that according to the Denon website, they listed the 5805 MK2 as having the Burr-Brown PCM-1791 DACs, instead of the flagship PCM-1792 DACs found in my DVD-5910CI.

The 5308CI has the PCM-1796 DACs, which is a notch above the PCM-1791, but still not quite the flagship PCM-1792 DACs.

So when you play SACD/DVD-A/CD on the 5910CI, will it be better to use the internal PCM-1792 DACs or the PCM-1796 DACs in the 5308?
