Denon DVD5900 --- Label Incompatability?

<font color='#000000'>Has anyone experienced discs from a particular Label refusing to play in the DVD5900 ( or any player)?

Yesterday, I purchased several multi-channel SACD and DVD-A discs. Two  Deutshe Grammophon DVD-A discs refuse to play in my new Denon DVD5900. (These are the only DG discs I own). They usually will not completely initialize (all the display info doesn't light up especially the channel indicators and track timing ). If they appear to complete initialization they absolutely refuse to start playing. I tried jumping to the next track ----the track number changes, but the minutes/seconds readouts never change and of course no sound.

Might I have a DVD5900 setup option wrong. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

<font color='#000000'>Well, the two discs play OK in a Sony DVD-Video player. I went into the DVD5900 menu under misc. options and set the player to play &quot;Video&quot;. The DVD5900 then will play the discs ok. But of course this is the Dolby surround associated with the video (which in this case is one slide per track) not the DVD-Audio high resolution I paid for. My concern is that there may be something wrong with the player. I have emailed both DENON and the label DG. So far no one has responded.

<font color='#000000'>Another update----

I took the two discs to my local dealer. They tried the two DG discs in 5 seperate Denon Models (including the dvd2900). They would not completely initialize and start playing in any of them. Then he tried them in a Panasonic DVD-Video/Audio player. They played in the Panasonic but only the Video layer.

Deutsche Gramaphon responded to my email. They want me to send the offending discs, at my expense, to them in Germany. They will inspect them and if they find a manufacturing defect they will replace them. They don't indicate what will happen if they determine the discs to be OK.

Still no response from Denon.

Another Label DVD-A Unplayable

Add the label "Philips" to the growing list of discs that won't play correctly. I can only get them to play IF I first, in options, set the Denon DVD-5900 to play it as a video disc. Correct me if I am wrong, but in this mode, I am not getting the full bandwidth benefits that I am paying for???

Isn't anyone else experiencing these kinds of troubles with DVD-A's?

Just wondering, do you have ANY DVD-A or SACD discs that will play on this machine? I've had no such encounters with the dozen or so titles I've purchased and played on my 2900 model.

Mort,

I have never had a problem with SACD ( I have approx. 20). I also have approx. 10 DVD-Audio that play properly. I seem to only have had trouble with Philips and DG which are part of the Universal conglomerate. Earlier in this thread I stated that my dealer (Tweeters) tried the DG discs in about 5 other Denon models (including the 2900) and 2 Panasonic models. The DG discs failed in all. So far Denon has not replied to my inquiry.

Interesting Hiker. First off, if you're not already aware, Denon has a firmware upgrade for the 5900 (2900 as well FWIW) that corrects some known irregularities in the unit.

Since the disks in question played on the DVD video machine (Sony) but not on any of the machines that incorcorate DVD-A/SACD etc, it would seem to be an encoding problem with those disks no? It's like they're flagged as video, and the universal units are seeing that and unable to find the audio only data that's being requested. Just my guess.

I've had better luck contacting Denon tech people (New Jersey) on the phone vs e-mail. They've been helpful and have returned calls when I had to talk to a machine.

Mort (who'll be staying clear of those brand disks)

Mort,

I took the Philips disc back to my dealer and this time got a more sympathetic saleman. None of their machines was hooked up to a TV monitor but we were able to determine that it did properly play in the 4 machines we tried (including Denon DVD2900). They did not have an Denon 5900 in stock to try. The saleman is going to contact Denon on monday to see if what they wan't to do about it.

Will keep this updated.

Stranger than science. Same dealer (I assume) and the first time the disk wouldn't play on a 2900 but it did on a subsequent trip? It'll be interesting to hear the conclusion of your saga Hiker54.....Good luck.

Hi Hiker54,

I have the same problems. I own a Denon A11, which is the same as the 5900. I can't play any dvd-audio from the Universal classical labels (Philips, Decca, DGG) The readings on the display are the same as yours. The only way to play this discs is the dvd-video mode.

I am already waiting 3 months for a solution, but the Belgium Denon importer is not very cooperative and that is the least one can expect for a player which costs in Belgium 2499 Euro.
When my dealer had another A11 in stock he let me try it out without succes. So I think there are a lot of players sold with the same defect as ours.

I hope the problem will be solved in the firmware update which is still not available for the a11.
Anyway I send a link to this thread to my dealer and to the Importer.
Maybe who more of us who complain, about this problem, the better the chance it will be resolved.

Greetings

Hi Gromit,

Finally someone who has the same trouble. Mort alerted me to another forum and discussions of firmware updates. I faxed the request for the firmware update two days ago. Denon has NEVER responded to my emails to their technical support email address. My dealer also has been unresponsive.

If I receive the firmware I'll post the results.

I received the Firmware updates for the Denon DVD5900 yesterday. Unfortunately, they didn't solve the problem. Will call DENON technical support in NJ on Monday. Will keep this posted.

I guess the firmware updates are not all that helpful. If you haven't yet received any response from Denon yet, try j_talmadge@denonnj.com. He might be able to put you into a better loop.

Mort,

I talked to Jeff Talmadge at Denon yesterday. He asked me to send him the catalog #'s of the discs that fail in my DVD5900. He said he will purchase them and forward them to Japan to have the engineers take a look at them.

Sounds like you've gone up the food chain about as far as you're going to get (this side of Japan anyway) Hiker54. It doesn't sound like you'll be enjoying those disks for a while.....which is a shame. Denon seems to have released the 5900 a tad prematurely..especially if you count in it's other issues (macro blocking etc).

Denon confirms the DVD5900 doesn't like Universal DVD-A's

Received a message from Jeff Talmadge @ Denon that they have confirmed that the DVD5900 doesn't like DVD-A's from the Universal Group (DG, Philips and Decca/London). He has forwarded sample discs to Japan. Hopefully, this will be a quick fix. They were previously unaware of this incompatability.

Hiker;

Thanks for the updates. I will track progress on this issue with Denon. They are sending me an upgraded DVD-5900 with active 1394 so I can connect to the Yamaha RX-Z9. If they have any firmware fixes for the DVD-A discs you mentioned, rest assured you will find it here first ;)

Denon DVD5900 DVD-Audio UMG Disc Trouble

Gene,

Jeff Talmadge has informed me that a Firmware revision (ESS A) is available to correct the DVD5900's inability to play UMG DVD-Audio's . Denon suggests that I return my Version "6" machine to NJ to get the the 1394 update (Versions 7 & 8) as they are not sure what updating a Version "6" machine with Version "A" will do to performance. So------, I am boxing it up for the factory updates.

Will keep this updated.
