Are you buying the player for audio or audio and video?

Assuming you're buying the player primarily for video or audio and video equally, whether or not you need a DVI output from a DVD player depends on your display. If it has a DVI input, then get a player with a DVI output. However, DVI is virtually obsolete for audio and video, HDMI is the current standard. At this point I would not recommend buying a DVD player that does not have a HDCP compliant HDMI output.

If you are buying the player for SACD/DVD-A playback, or if you're display only had component video inputs, then it doesn't really matter whether the player has DVI or HDMI. I bought a Newcastle SD-860 a few months ago and it doesn't have DVI or HDMI, but that's not a problems for me. My CRT based RPTV only has component video inputs and I bought it primarily as an audio player, video is secondary to me, although it is a good video player, also.

I am in agreement with Dan.

If video is important, get HDMI with HDCP compliance.
If not, get whatever sounds good to you.
