Denon DVD-2930 Disc Playing Problems

Hi one and all my first post here so go easy!

I purchased a 2930 in October 2006 and use it mostly for playing SACDs. Now have a problem when I put a SACD in the player. It starts loading in the usual way then you hear it trying to 'mount' the disc a few times. Then it gives up and loads indicating I have a standard CD. It will play but only the cd stereo layer of the disc. Wonder if anyone has had this happen to them or will know what the likely problem is and if a major repair is likely costing who knows what. My guess is it is more than just dust in the way!

Welcome to the forum!

I have to say, dust (or other debris) is the first thing that came to mind for me. I'm under the impression, perhaps incorrectly, that there are two different lasers for CD and SACD. If that's the case, then the SACD lens could be dirty and not be able to pick up the SACD layer, even though the CD lens can read the CD info.

Have you tried to blow compressed air (or even a hair dryer) over the lenses, or use a lens-cleaning disc? Just wondering.

Hi thanks for your reply. Tried the options you suggested no change so suspect a new optical lens is necessary. Have arranged for an engineer to look at the player and give me quote for sorting it.

Thanks once again for your response.

Yes these players have two pickups, one for Redbook CD & one for everything else. My Denon 2900 has the opposite problem, reads SACD & DVD-A like a champ but frequently has trouble with redbook CD. I looked into getting the parts to repair it myself, not worth it.

I don't have a problem with this player but I found an inconvenience for lack of a better word. I use it primarily as DVDA/SACD player however when I want to play some DVDV sometimes I have to access the DVD menu to get everything running, ie: Genesis CD/DVD, to choose DTS96/24 or Dolby Digital, so here's the catch: I got the 2930 hooked to a Denon 3808 via DenonLink. I'm also running a HDMI from the player to the receiver, but if I select "HDMI" on the player to access the menu, the sound output is only 2CH unless I switch DenonLink off, and use the MCH option on the HDMI menu. So what's the big inconvenience:confused:, well this player is HDMI 1.1, so if I want to listen to SACD, I have to disable the HDMI feature on the player in order to use DenonLink which allows me to listen to MCH (DSD). Bottom line is HDMI has priority over Denon Link. There's a workaround though, use the component outputs instead of HDMI so I can watch the menus on the HDTV, but I was getting used to having just a few cables connected to each other, I guess there's no other way :(

Hello-

Yes, I have had this same problem with my 2.5 year old 2930ci. It fails to recognize the SACD layers of hybrid SACDs. Seems to work fine with strict SACDs and I have not had problems with DVD-audio disks. As I have only slowly began buying SACDs, I suspect (but do not know) that the player has always had the problem. Needless to say, I am very disappointed in the player and will not likely buy another Denon component.

Have you found a solution for your player SACD?

Thanks

This may sound obvious but here goes: did you try accessing the other layers of the SACD using the "Super Audio CD Setup" key on the remote????

Hi caupina-

It never hurts to ask the obvious. Yes, I tried to access the other layers of the SACD using both the player's remote and the SACD setup button on the player itself. Each attempt failed on many, many tries. I also tried ejecting and reloading the disc(s) multiple time to try to get the player to recognize the SACD layers. Again, uniform failure. One of the hybrid SACDs I have (Dire Straits Brothers in Arms) seems to work just fine. Most, however, do not. I suspect the Denon's ability to recognize hybrid SACDs is just not very robust.

Thanks

Hi,

Check the 2930CI thread at AVS. It could be the laser mechanism.
It is an known issue that owners of this player (myself included) have
had to accept.

Having said that, I still love this unit.
