Denon DVD-2910 and Hi-Res Audio confusion

aspaceintime is correct - SACD and DVD-A will only be outputted(is that actually a word?) on the 6 analog outputs of your 2910. Choose "analog" or "multi-channel" input on your receiver. The optical output is just for PCM (regular CDs and Dolby Digital/DTS audio) Also, you must choose "audio" preference (not Video) in the "other" or "ETC" portion of your DVD-2910s setup menu. This step is not explained well in the user manual. If you've done it right, you'll see the DVD-A or SACD light up on your 2910 display.
Let us know how it works out. The difference with multi-channel is amazing.

Hey guys, I am having a similar problem to what is being discussed here, but not quite the same.

I just bought the 2910, and am having some setup problems (I have the 3803 receiver.) I had intended to use the DVD source for the SACDs and DVD-Audios with the "EXT IN" mode (analog inputs), and the Video Aux source for DVD movies using "Auto" for DD/DTS (digital coaxial).

The problem: the 6 analog outputs are producing sound no matter what source I play or what mode I play them in. If I have the receiver set to Video Aux and play a DVD, I hear BOTH the digital coax and the analog inputs.

I can turn the volume on my receiver all the way down to -80db and I STILL am hearing the sound from the analog plugs coming through loud and clear. I can tell the problem is with the analog plugs; when I disconnect them and just play a DVD through the digital coaxial, movies sound great.

Is there something I'm missing in the setup?

Here are my current setup settings:

Digital Interface Setup:
HDMI Audio Setup - MULTI (Normal)

Audio Setup:
Audio Channel - Multi Channel
Digital Output - Normal
LPCm (44.1khz/48khz) - Off
Source Direct - Off

Other Setup:
Player Mode - Video

Any help would be hot!

Agent Baker:
Set your 2910s "Other"Player mode setting to "Audio" (Not Video). This is exactly the same mistake I made; after changing this one setting, your player will magically start decoding/outputting DVD-Audio and SACD audio on the six analog outputs. You'll see the "SACD" or DVD-Audio indicators light up on the 2910's front panel. Enjoy the difference.

Thanks Geno, but I've tried that with no success. I'll try again when I get home tonight.

The other problem I noticed is I'm only getting the 2 front channels to work..no sound is coming through the center, rears or sub when I attempt to play a SACD or DVD-A.

Agent Baker...........
I've not heard of the Video Aux. Use the dvd source for movies (DD & DTS). Use the 5.1 inputs on back of receiver, and EXT. IN for the dvd-a and sacd music. Video Aux. doesn't come into the picture at all.
Other Setup:
Player Mode - Video
Instead of video here, put it on audio, and see if that helps. Player will still work for movies.
Good luck!

Thanks, but to restate, changing the "Other Player" setting to Audio is not helping. Doesn't change a thing. Neither does using the DVD source for both digital & EXT IN.

I wonder if there is something wrong with the decoder. For the 6 analog plugs, I'm only getting sound out of the 2 fronts, and pretty bad at that. As well, like I said before, it comes out at the same volume, even if I turn the receiver volume completely down. What is making it do that?

So my receiver is still accepting sound from the digital AND the analog when I play a DVD, creating a terrible "echo" effect.

This is frustrating...the picture is terrific, and as a standalone CD player it's pretty good, but I want my 6 channel analog!

I don't understand what you mean by this statement. My brain must be locked this morning. Are you talking about the dvd setting (shows "DVD" in the lcd window on front of receiver)? Only use the dvd setting for watching movies, or playing redbook cds. Use the EXT. IN setting for dvd-a and sacd. It's bound to be something wrong in the setup, unless your receiver IS bad.

Where are you located? If you're in eastern NC, I'll come by and help set it up. :)

The problem with getting only 2 channels out sounds like bad cables or a malfunction of either the DVD player or receiver. I'd do some cable-swapping first, since that's the cheapest & easiest starting point.

Thanks for the offer JVC, but I'm on the other side of the country, just south of Seattle (Go Hawks!).

I will try swapping the cables Geno, but I am 99% sure the problem is with the DVD player. I had the Pioneer DV-563A universal in there previously, and the 6 analog inputs worked just fine, as well as the digital coaxial for movies. I just unplugged them from the Pioneer and plugged them into the Denon, making sure the right plugs went into the right inputs.

yeah, sounds like you have a problem. Do you have a friend with a system, so you can hook your dvd player up to it. If it does the same, you know it's the dvd player. If it works fine, you know it's the receiver.......if no friend, maybe the store?
Good luck!

Update: switching cables didn't change anything.

Yes, I have a friend coming over tomorrow to help, but I think I just got a lemon. I'll likely end up taking it back and exchanging it for another one. I love the picture, so I'll just swap it for another 2910.

Well, it turns out my receiver is the problem.

I pulled the Denon out and plugged my old Pioneer in, and I had the same problem.

Great.

I swear the Pioneer was working just fine a week ago. Was it just a coincidence that the EXT INs would stop working when I plugged the 2910 in?

OK, so now my question becomes, will fixing the EXT INs be expensive?
