Whoa, sweet deal.

The 2800 is a transport only for those that do not know.

The new denon Blu-ray players look pretty good though, and prices are starting out much lower than last years models.

An 8 for a 5!

Hmm... Do you mean the 2500? ;)

Last year Denon DVD-2500BTCI is indeed a Blu-ray disc Transport only.
It was retailing for $999 at the time of it's release. It weights a healthy 20.3 lbs and it is 5.5" high. It also has separate blocks to suppress interference between circuits.
In addition, the top cover features a two-layered construction and the chassis bottom is constructed of three layers to protect the circuits from vibration.

There is also another model, the Denon DVD-3800BDCI, which is a full Blu-ray Disc player, with 7-channel analog outputs using the Texas Instruments TI PCM-1796a Dacs for all channels. Plus when using the player in 2-channel stereo only, the Dacs are configured in Dual-Differential mode.
The retail price at the time of it's release, was $1,999.

For more info on these and this year models, visit Denon USA web site.

it is a unit that does not do on-board decoding or processing.

So the receiver needs to do most of the work?
The receiver would do all the audio processing as the 2500 is a digital only transport. It has no analog outputs to help reduce interference.

Taken directly from denon website:

"Go beyond standard processing with the ultimate Blu-Ray/DVD/CD digital transporter for the digital purist. Combining top-of-the line audio/video standards with a rigid, multi¬layered construction, this breakthrough transporter eliminates outside interference to deliver unrivaled playback from a wide range of digital sources. And all this performance is delivered to your HDTV via HDMI"

I'll take a Panny BD60 or Sammy 2550 anytime over the Denon 2500.

Anyway, it is mainly for people with Denon A/V receivers from let's say 3808ci and up, that want to keep their components matching togeteher in their racks.
But the fact is, that even at $279, it is still overpriced and quite useless for the majority of normal people.

To give you the perfect example of what I mean; did you see the movie "Young Frankenstein"? If yes, you probably remember "Abe Normal".
Well, the Denon 2500 is a good analogy to that scene.
