Denon DL-110 in the house!

Seriously, I have no life.
My new Denon DL-110 is installed and playing. It replaced an old Denon DL-103d that I've had for a really long time and haven't used much because it's old enough that I don't really trust the suspension. I played one album before I replaced it and compared- definitely better separation, bass is punchy but not exaggerated, treble is smooth and extended and I'm a happy camper. It's output is higher than many moving coil models but definitely not as high as a moving magnet. I'll be looking at MC preamps and will take suggestions. I used a Pro-Ject on a client's system and it sounds good but his receiver didn't have an RIAA phono preamp- it only has an input called 'phono'.

I assume that you are using this with a MM input. I heard this was a high output MC cartridge so it can be used with MM inputs, but do you think this would still perform better with a MC preamp?

You will need a MC preamp with very unusual peak input level ability. Most will clip using the Denon high output MC on transients on the music. It's better to use a MM pre-amp input with relatively high gain(for a MM).

What is a good affordable separate phono pre-amp with low noise? I've noticed that the phono inputs on the vintage receiver I owned were remarkably quiet, but I have yet to own a modern piece of gear with a phono section that quiet.

While the phono input on my Marantz receiver is probably a little better then average, there is still something left to be desired.

Musical Hall PA1.2 is an excellent unit with simple transparent operation and very low noise level. It has multiple loading options and has MM and MC mode.

Thanks! I'll check into this. This may be what I'm looking for. Looks nice too!

I'm using a Denon AVR-990 now and I get a good level at -9dB, which is OK. I'd prefer to have a hot signal and leave the volume control lower, so the noise floor stays where it should be.
