Hello all,

I am very new to the home audio game, but I am in no slouch in the car audio world. Unfortunately the two don't correlate as much as I hoped. I am looking for a very basic 5.1-5.2 setup. I have already purchased my speakers and sub.

I know denon is a good Brand but what are the differences in these two products? Am I paying for brand or is there something that the denon is packing that will provide better sound quality?

Thanks.

Just like car audio, the space and speakers are far more important than the electronics. What speakers and subs did you get? Mostly differences among avrs at your price point are the features you want.

I have the denon s510bt and I'm pretty happy with it. a little more power would be nice, but it wasn't in my budget. though I live in a house and still have enough volume to piss the neighbors off. lol

plus I like having audyssey (comes with denon receivers) to help give me a baseline for crossover settings, levels, distances, etc.

lovin is right. your speakers are going to be the key component to a good sounding system over the electronics, though I've always been partial to denon or yamaha.

I was hoping to avoid that question because I'm sure I'll recieve some negative feedback.

I was looking at klipsch f3 tower speakers used on Craigslist and then the guy flaked. They wete $200.

So then I got on parts express and started looking at reviews and found some Dayton products. I purchased all Dayton. I'm well aware it ring be the best stuff out there and I'm not expecting greatness.

Dayton t562 towers
Dayton b652-air bookshelf
Dayton ccs-33b 3 way center
Dayton 1200 sub

Ran me $376.

All are 6 ohm configuration besides the three-way Center.

looking up the specs on the sony, I can only seem to find power output at 6 ohms? which is 90 watts with 2 channels driven. that will drop even more at 8 ohms, which is where youre going to find most home speakers. given a choice between the 2 I'd go with the denon.

and what is with these companies giving specs at 6 ohms anyway? they all seem to be doing that now. a lot of them are giving power specs at 6 ohms with... one channel driven? who drives one channel? sheesh

Yes, the reviews I read were very positive and for the price I couldn't resist. 45 day no hassle return and a 5 year warranty, ill take it.

Running all of them at 6 ohm besides the center won't be an issue will it?

Which AVR will provide the best EQ settings or are they relatively the same? Also, neither have a PREOUT for an external amp, so how would I go about hooking up an external amp or is that not an option with these AVRS?

I have little experience with 6 ohm speaker setups. these companies give out 6 ohm ratings for their avrs, but I'm pretty sure they're really meant for 8? someone else with more knowledge than I will reply soon on that I'm sure.

I do believe you'll find that denon will have the better eq settings with audyssey.

on a side note, I started out with car audio too. got tired of tearing everything out when I bought a new truck and determined I'll get more mileage with a nice home setup anyway. I had a mcintosh amp for my boston accoustics speakers and a zapco mono amp for my subs. it was a pretty sweet system.

okay, yeah. you have a lot more going on than I did! it's been about ten or 12 years since I played with car audio. I picked and parted a lot of the stuff I got from pawn shops in the area. my system was small, but very balanced an super clean. that mcintosh amp is still the best sounding amp I've heard for driving main speakers in car audio.

that's an impressive system you have man. you put a lot of thought and effort into it. I'm confident you'll end up with what you want for home too. just wait for some more replies. there are a lot of knowledgeable, helpful folks on this forum.

Dayton has some good stuff for the price, I wouldn't worry about it. I built a pair of the BR-1 speakers. I like them very much and Dennis Murphy of Philharmonic Audio thought well of them also, redesigned their crossover network and touches up the cabinets all for a great price in his Affordable Accuracy model.

FWIW many 8 ohm speakers should be rated 6 or even 4 sometimes. Amp specs check the manual for, usually the more comprehensive specs you'll find from the manufacturer, unless you can find a solid bench test to go by.

Don't set your avr to the lower impedance setting, use the higher impedance setting regardless of the speakers you have, its just a limiting feature to qualify for certain power specs. http://www.audioholics.com/audio-amplifier/impedance-selector-switch-1

As to your avr choice, I like Denons with Audyssey, the 510 doesn't appear to have that feature, can you move up the model line a bit? Have you looked at accessories4less.com?

the 510 does have audyssey. I have it and use it.

*edit:
wrong. I just looked it up. it's their setup assistant. I always assumed it was audyssey.

No Audyssey, sort of some simple thing like Onkyo's AccuEQ thing when they couldn't afford Audyssey any longer. I'd get at least Audyssey MultEQ (rather than 2EQ).

yeah, I discovered that when I looked it up. I always thought it was audyssey. I was wrong.

I went with the Sony STR-DH550. It does have a 30 day return on it. I bought it from a local best buy. I will be hooking it up tonight I will tell you my thoughts. Unfortunately it won't be hooked up with 4k yet. (My 4k isn't in my new apartment yet)

Reason I went with sony:

Price
Banana Plugs
Features appeared to be the same

Like I said early I have been in car audio pretty deep, so I had some nice banana plugs laying around still and some nice 14 gauge OFC NVX speaker wire.

that's awesome. sorry about the misinformation. I'm still a bit of a noob myself with just about enough knowledge to be dangerous. :p

fortunately there are a bunch of good guys on this forum with some pretty extensive knowledge. I lurk and read more than I post. learning new stuff all the time.

One more question for anyone who can answer. is there such thing as adding an external clip indicator? This was common in car audio.

Just as Pogre said, there's more knowledge than enough to get you headed in the right direction, I to do more lurking and constantly reading than posting and having a big or small budget has benefits of course but what's important also is what sounds good to YOUR ears and just as your experiences, knowledge and drive with car audio systems has a place here, and while having a large or small budget, refurbished components is good choice to, just be sure that the company is solid and a authorize dealer of that brand...Enjoy

Everything is hooked up and playing. All I can say is wow! I am blown away with how well this setup sounds. The sub provides a ton of bass, I listen to a lot of rap music and the bass is great. It did scare my dog to the point she peed from one side of the room to the other, so that's about my only negative thing about this so far.

Do wish Sony would automatically have the setting for the sub to be turned on.

What do you guys think about this, the Dayton audio ats1200. A self powered TV Stand with built in sub and speakers. Could my current system play alongside the TV Stand or would it not be worth the investment.

I've seen that in the catalog before, you already have better speakers/sub and adding it wouldn't work well. Audio generally is not an "investment" except in your listening pleasure.... :). Probably not much as far as furniture goes, either....
