Do these newer Denon receivers bench test close to their specs? That amp section looks mighty wimpy!

Hi Gene! I recently bought the AVR-X3400H after reading this review and also the detailed review of the AVR-X3300W. I am using the preamp outputs with my Emotiva XPA-5. I'm looking for your opinion on utilizing the typically-avoided ECO mode with an external amp, as in my setup. I spoke with Denon and their technical support assured me that the preamp output voltage is NOT impacted by ECO mode. Have you experienced anything contradictory or have any other thoughts? Thanks very much!

Not Gene but Eco mode is related to limiting the receivers power amps not the pre amp stage so there should be no affect on any externally amplified channels because of this as it's only an unamplified signal sent to the outboard amp.

I have used Eco mode on my Denon X4300H and also run an external 5 channel amp through the receivers pre amp outputs and haven't noticed any difference between the feature being on or off. Now I would only use it in Auto mode if not running any external amps and only if the receiver seems to get overly hot in it's location after playing dynamic content at higher levels for a time. Mine runs just a hair cooler with it engaged but even when off my receivers open location keeps it lukewarm at most. Enclosing these Denon receivers on all sides with inadequate airflow is the major problem and120MM USB cooling fans are usually the best fix here.

Thanks so much roadwarrior, I really appreciate the info. I have a lot of ventilation in my rack so I think it should be fine. I figure why not let it run as cool as possible if I'm not losing any performance.

No problem Tyler. I think you should be as well. Happy to help.

Thanks for the review. Is the 3400 worth upgrading to from the 3300w? I see its currently 799 at best buy.

Haha! Thanks I’ll call them immediately. :) I was asking just as the 3300 is 599 and the 3400 is on sale for 799. I read the review on the 3300 where the general recommendation was that an upgrade really wasn’t worth it. Just wondering what you pros thought on 3300 vs 3400. I know the 3400 offers some 32 bit processing, and heos. Not sure if it’s worth the extra $200

Just to cover your options, the 3300 (refurbished by Denon with a 1 year Denon warranty) is $480 from accessories4Less:

Many of us have gone this route and been happy with the results.
I have had excellent results with refurbs done by the manufacturer and all of the mainstream AVR manufacturers have chosen A4L to distribute their reconditioned gear because they are a solid professional outfit.

X3400H has been measured and no suprises there. Very similar results what Gene got with X3300. Internals stays the same year after year, only some new features come.

"Oh, yeah: The receiver performed admirably throughout, with no sign of clipping or brightening, at the enthusiastic levels I employ. So unless you have quite a large home theater (mine’s about 3,300 cubic feet) or quite low-sensitivity speakers, you should have no worries when it comes to oomph."

What is also nice to notice is the performance for 8ohm 2/5/7ch is on par with X4200 and not far from Marantz SR7011. Where the more expensive models go ahead slightly more is 4ohm continuos power, though Gene said that X3300 behaved very good with 4ohm loads while Yamaha A860 didn`t! I`m already seeing some very good prices for this as X3500H is lurking around the corner.
