Denon AVR-889 new HDMI Handshake issue?

Hey all. I have a Directv DVR hooked up to my Denon receiver and then to my Panasonic TV. The system had worked perfectly probably for about 2 years. Just about a week ago, the system started having issues when I'd change channels on Directv. I would lose all audio/video signal anywhere from 30 sec to 10-15 min. Turning everything off and on again would sometimes fix the issue. It seems to me that it's a HDMI handshake problem, but why would it just begin now with no changes made to the system? Any way to fix it?

Thanks for the help!

Check all your cables. Any chance you, a child, a pet has been poking around the back panels lately. Check all HDMI cables and reseat them in the socket. You may want to try swapping around some cables to see if the problem goes away or changes.

You may have a more serious problem, but start with the easy stuff first. I had a similar issue a while back after making some changes to my setup. A cable that worked perfectly from the cable box to the stereo did not work very well at all when used from stereo to TV.

It is also possible, yet somewhat unlikely that your cable box had some form of update which broke things.

i'm thinking it's the update issue. i've tried different inputs and cables. i'll have to contact them to ask about recent updates.

It's a DirecTV firmware upgrade bug. I believe it does have HDMI handshake issues. Of course the tech support people blame it on the receiver (mine did the same thing...on a Panasonic tv and a Yamaha Rx). It's not the cabling.

My fix was to change the DTV DVR to output a 720P resolution instead of 1080i. Now it works just fine.

Good luck. Hopefully this little workaround will do it for you, too.

Continuous, known issues..
Direct TV boxes are not HDMI certified..
Without this certification there is no confidence that the Direct TV box has been tested for interoperabilty with other HDMI products including AVRs..

Just my $0.02.. ;)

Thanks for the solved handshake

The same problem happened to me ... thanks, Tomorrow, for your solution. Directv is such a pain!
