Denon AVR-4310 - a lemon?

Hi - Just purchased a Denon AVR-4310CI yesterday. I wanted the new BluRay codecs that my current AVR-5803 didn't have.

But I have 2 show-stoppers that have me thinking of returning it tomorrow.

For the life of me, I can't get any audio to come out of the 4310 from my Sony BDP-CX960 BD DVD player. I get great video, but zero audio thru HDMI.

I verified the HDMI cable is good - I hooked it up directly to my TV and I get everything.

I also have a DirecTV HR20-700 hooked up with HDMI, and this is working perfectly. I swapped the HR20 to the DVD input, and it worked fine.

Seems like a handshake issue, no?

Second issue - My ethernet port seems frozen. I can't get anything to connect. I'm using a Cat-6 cable wired directly to my router. When I go into my router's status page, the port shows "cable disconnected".

For the heck of it, I tried an old trick of hooking up the 4310's ethernet port to my laptop, and I couldn't see it there either. Used a different cable too.

Do you think I have a lemon, or do you have any ideas I could use? I really like the sound out of this unit - Audessy did a much better job than I did with my RS sound meter, and I don't want to have to re-install my AVR-5803 if I don't have to....

What are your settings in the Denon for your network? Is Upnp enabled in your router?

As for the Bluray, what are the setting in the sony and the denon?

I can't even get the Denon to see the network - it's as if I'm plugging in the cable to a dead ethernet jack

Here are the Sony BD settings:
Audio Settings on the CX960 (I already tried a factory reset to no avail)
Audio Output Priority: HDMI
Audio (HTMI): Auto
BD Audio Setting: Direct
Audio Att: Off
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48khz/96Hkz PCM: 96 (48 didn't work either)
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Noamal

The Denon settings are all default (and output is set to Amp)

Do a hard reset and do a firmware update. Then, try it again. This is described in the manual. Also, once you get everything set up the way you want, save the configuration to your computer. This is also in the manual.

Also just want to confirm that your connecting to the ethernet port and not the Denon link?

need to upgrade your dvd player

You might have to upgrade your firmware for your Dvd player from Sony as I have the 995 and just bought a Panasonic 50" plasma and had to upgrade the firmware for it to pass HDMI signals to the monitor as the DVD was only HDMI v1 and wouldn't pass deep color So you might want to try that first. Have to love the HDMI issues aren't they great. Good luck Greg

Thanks - the firmware was updated on the Sony BD player about 2 weeks ago.

Strange thing is that video is being passed, not audio. Even tried with a plain-old CD, and got no audio.

Side note: then connecting your denon direct to your laptop most likely you'll need cross-over cable (no such need for switches/routers)
If your Denon powered on and connected to switch - if there's no light on switch - i'd check if my network cable and settings on denon reciever.
Thou I don't own network enabled avr, there might be an option to disable it??

Bored - you're absolutely right of course... My connection to the laptop was just a swag attempt to see if I could see any signs of life from the AVR's ethernet port.

I could live with the ethernet stuff - I really bought this for the ability to play the new BD codecs and the Audessy calibration.

Have you done a hard reset yet as highfigh suggested? After that if it still won't pass audio then may be you should double check your 'source select' for the Sony player input and make sure 'Input mode' is selected to 'HDMI' or 'auto' and not anything else. Then go to 'HDMI' setup for 'Audio' and make sure it is selected to 'Amp' and not TV.

I did not read the 4310 manual and I just assume the menu screen is similar to that for the 4308.

If everything checks out then it is time to return it and get a replacement. It is hard to believe you can have a lemon from Denon but I guess anything is possible.

I called Denon earlier tonight. Got a great guy on the phone. When I described the issues he said I should return it right away.

I was sad to see it gone, but it's been returned.

I'm thinking there was something wrong with the HDMI handshake. As far as the ethernet issue goes, the Denon guy said it sounded like the port wasn't wired correctly.

I was sad to see it gone, but it's been returned.

Thank you for sharing your experience. As an owner of 3 Denon AVRs and one universal player, I always thought this sort of things cannot happen with Denon product. I hope you will give it a chance by simply getting a replacement or upgrade to the 4810.
