I just received my Denon AVR-4306 last Friday and replaced my older preamp with it this weekend. So far I am very impressed, but today I discovered something that concerns me.

It appears that it will not display a high-def signal nor decode Dolby Digital from my Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 cable box. It is connected identically to my old pre-amp with component video cables throughout and with a coax digital cable.

I really like this receiver and it has the perfect feature set. So can anyone shed some light on what the problem may be, and what I can do to correct It?

I would really appreciate the assistance.

I have found some posts referring to problems passing DVI/HDMI signals from cable box to receiver, but not with component.
My problem is that my tv only has one component input, so I must rely on the receiver to do my switching.

Any clues would be real helpful.

With all the connection possibilities these days, the systems are no longer simply plug & play. Just wanted to know if you have gone through and set up all the input assignments?

I just got the 4306 yesterday and I have the manual handy, so . . .

. . . if you go to page 67 you will see the "audio input setup" where you will do the digital audio in assigning. Hopefully this will fix your audio problem. (if you don't have the manual you can find it online on Denon's website)

I've only been able to glance at the manual so far, so if I find the likely solution to your video issue I'll post it later if you haven't figured it out.

Yes I have done the input assignments for both audio and video. The cable box plays audio and displays video properly when connected through the receiver on all but High-Def programming.

I had a problem connecting the Denon 4306 to my Scientific Atlanta 8000HD DVR cable box via the DVI out using a monster DVI-HDMI adapter. I was getting green artifacts all over the screen, but I wasn't sure if the adapter was the culprit or not. I reverted to using the component video cables and the problem went away.
In another subject...connect your router to the 4306 and WOW! Internet radio and it can play all the songs that are on your computer. Just download Windows Media Connect. VERY COOL!

Besides the unfortunate comp-HDMI issues, how've you found the 4306 as a pre/pro? What did it replace? What amp(s) have you paired with and how's it sounded? How do you like the Audyssy EQ and other whiz-bang sorts of features?

I'm also considering replacing an older pre/pro (original Sunfire Theater Grand) in my HT with the 4306 doing preamp duty. Sonically, I've loved the Sunfire but it's gotten a bit outdated featurewise... no DD EX or DTS-ES, no multichannel audio inputs, no HDMI, no room correction EQ, etc.

My plan was to keep my 5Ch Sunfire amp and upgrade the pre/pro, though there remain very few that have HDMI video switching (Anthem, NAD, et al have announced but nothing available quite yet). I also own a Denon 3804 in my casual family room setup, which I've enjoyed so I guess I'm generally a Denon fan.

Thanks,
Lee

AVR 4306 Dolby Digital Problems

I've just upgraded my AVR 3802 to the all singing and dancing AVR 4306, however I have something strange going on with the sound.

I am using optical inputs for all my components, Sky+, Xbox and DVD.

When playing a DVD with Dolby Digital sound in either my DVD player or in the xbox, I only get some of the sound appearing. I get the soundtrack and some effects, but the speech doesn't come through. Sometimes I can hear the speech in the faint background, but it's muffled.

However when I switch to stereo, 5CH stereo or such like, the speech comes through fine. It appears the dolby digital decoder in standard mode isn't working properly, or I've configured something incorrectly. DTS DVDs are also suffering from the same problem.

I even tried running the latest pro evolution soccer XBOX game (Dolby Digital Audio), and all the footy game effects were present, but the commentators speech was missing, despite it being turned on. Again if I switch out of the Dolby Digital standard mode I hear the speech with everything else.

I've got the usual 5:1 setup, using two rear speakers as surround A.

Has anybody got a clue what's going on?

Have you calibrated the receiver, either manually or using auto setup, so that the level of each channel is equal? It could be as simple as the level of the center channel being too low relative to the others.

Do Not Own A Denon 4306 As of yet,However in preperation for That
I`m currently Reading the Instructions that I Downloaded Ahead Of Time
in order to try to get a jump on the Install thats a Bear!
I`m sure you Have Done all the Audio Assignments Necessary Correct. As It
Sounds as if the problem might be in there.
On other thing, you Mentioned you are using the Surround A speakers As
Your rear Surround Correct?
As I Read It Surround A & B Connections were to be used as Other Room Speakers And The Rear Surround Posts Were To Be Used In The Dolby 5-1 Surround Setup.
I Wonder If It really matters,If Your Not Going To Use The Other Room Speaker Posts( I Do Intend to Use).

Sorted

I was being a muppet, one of the sound cables had popped out of the centre speaker. Plugged it back in and I can hear the people talking now. Great!

WOW...is the 4306 really this problematic?

I've got a new one sitting a box waiting to be installed, but I could return it tomorrow and go with Parasound separates.

I just can't believe all these issues. I'm gonna get a surround sound in a box!
