Denon AVR-22311CI and 4 ohm speakers

Can I run a new Denon receiver such as the AVR-2311CI with some old Klipsch KG 2 speakers that are 4 ohm speakers without damaging either the speakers or receiver?

I guess you mean the 2311?

The Denon manual says 6 to 16 Ohm loads.
If you're going to listen at no greater than low to moderate sound levels or use it for background music, then I'd try it.
Otherwise, no.
To be 100% sure you'd need to see that speakers' impedance curve. (it's probably not available)

Also, since speakers have advanced so much since that speaker was first introduced in 1982.
You can probably find a low cost 8-Ohm speaker that sounds better.

I agree you should be able to get better sound than that 30 years old model without spending a lot of money. The 2311 is a nice unit that deserves something more current.

As to the question of running 4 ohm speakers, you cannot really generalize the matter because you have to consider many other factors. For example, there are many tiny HT in a box kind of speakers that are rated 4 ohms or less yet they are typically powered by relatively weak amps. One major factor is the sensitivity and the power handling rating.

I am not sure if the Googled data is accurate, but if it is, then the 2311 is fine because the KG2 would have 90.5 dB 1W@1M so it would be like (now this is a generalized statement I am making) an 8 ohm speaker with 87.5 dB 1W@1M. It can also handle 65W continuous and 325W peak. Based on such Googled specs I would not worry about damaging either the AVR or the speakers as long as the speakers are not in near spent condition due to old age. Modern AVRs such as the 2311 should have overcurrent protection so if anything, you would risk damaging those old speakers, not the AVR.

Go ahead and try it, at worst it'll run hot and shut down after a certain listening time at higher volumes, though IIRC denon/marantz design their amps to be 4 ohm stable anyways, they just don't list it.
