Denon AVR-1804 Not Auto-Switching to Dolby Digital

My Denon has always switched over to Dolby Digital automatically when it senses a Dolby Digital signal. But today it isn't working.

There have been a couple changes made today. I had my Aperion speakers installed. The installers took out my "monitor out" cable saying it wasn't needed. I wonder if they were right.

Additionally, my DVD player burned out yesterday so I bought a new DVD player (a cheapo Toshiba $40 special) at Costco today. I probably should have bought a blu-ray player to utilize the true capabilities of my panny 720p LCD. But that's beside the point.

I have my new DVD player hooked up to my Denon through a digital coaxial cable. I also have it hooked up to my TV via an hdmi cable. The COAX input is assigned to the DVD. Optical 1 is hooked up to the TV.

So now, when I play DVD's the amplifier will NOT recognize the Dolby Digital signal. But when I play OTA TV signals from my antenna through my TV, I do get the Dolby Digital signal through my amp.

Can anyone tell me how to fix my problem?

I've attached a picture of how things are hooked up.

Ok, I don't know how many of each of the various optical/coax inputs/outputs you have . . .

but the optical from the Denon to TV is redundant. Lose it for now, at least.

Then go into DVD player menu. See if there is anything you can enable to have the codecs sent as "bitstream". In some cheaper/older/simpler things, it could be called "audiophile", hehe, or something else.

Can you find such a setting? If so, try, and report back.

Thanks for the input. It's much appreciated. I went into the settings in the DVD player and it was set to PCM. I set it to RAW and voila! everything worked fine.

So . . . you're saying the optical cable to the TV is redundant? How then would the over-the-air signal from the TV be sent to the amplifier for Dolby Digital output?

Thanks again. It's a relief to have everything up and running.

I didn't know it was for the OTA signal, because it was never specified (thought the optical was an effort towards the DVD player haha). So I sometimes forget that OTA usually means ATSC tuner inside the TV itself. Forgive me, I have to use an outboard tuner because my projector doesn't have an ATSC tuner.

Glad it worked out.
