Hey guys, I have Axiom M80s and was wonder about a reciever to match them up with. I did research, read in the forum, but would like to ask an up front question.

How do people like this reciever (Denon 4806) for those who have one?

Is there a better one, Denon or other brand?

I have been a pioneer fan for a long time and have a hard time breaking out into another brand, but pioneer does not make a low imp reciever that I am aware of. My price is $4000.

Also I love the sound of the axiom M80s paired with my brother's denon, but now am nervous that I should trade them in for the M60s that run at an imp of 8 because I am hearing that the lower ohms burn out recievers faster.
Is this true?
I will eventually be running a 7.1 with all other surronds at 8 ohms.
Sorry for the long question, thanks everyone!! Also I like metal music, wife likes classical, soft, pop, and we both love movies

I don't own one, but I pair my 3805 with a 2 channel power amp. If you worry about the 4 ohm issue, you could consider a 3806 but add a 2 ch amp to drive the M80's. You asked if there is a better one, there are many, Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, Harmon Kardon, B&K, NAD all have flag ship models that are robust enough to handle 4 ohm speakers. Actually, based on the published specifications, I have no doubt the 4806 can handle your M80's too.

Receiver options

I agree, the Denon 4806 would have now problem with the M80's. However, in that budget, you might consider a speperates or receiver/amp solution. For example you could buy the Denon 3806 (or Yamaha RX-V2600) for about $1k and the Emotiva MPS-1 amp for $2k and come in under budget. The emotiva is capable of 300 Watts x 7 monoblock channels into 4 ohms. Also, as A/V features and formats change, you can replace the receiver or pre-pro and keep the amp.

The Emotiva Pre-pro and MPS-1 combo comes in just over your budge at $4300.

I have not installed my system yet (described below), but the shop I purchased the 4806 from had it powering a high end "boutique" type surround sound system from Von Schweikert (sp?) selling for an obscene amount of money and it rocked them. They also demoed it with a high end Energy system and it handled them with absolutely no problem also.

Before I purchased the Axiom's, I asked the tech at Axiom if the 4806 would be sufficient. He laughed and said it was more than enough. Of course he was selling the stuff, so I guess time will tell.

Is the 4 ohm thing an issue here?
