Denon 4308CI surround modes

Hi -

I am not sure whats wrong but recently I moved a bunch of stuff and wiring and everything works fine with the exception of some "missing" surround modes. I am not finding the Nueral, Dolby etc. surround modes. Can someone please help!

The surround modes that are available at any given time are dependent on the audio format of the source and how the source device is connected to the receiver (ie., via analog or digital).

If you've recently moved things around and re-wired everything, check your setup. If you used digital connections, like coax or optical, make sure the inputs on the receiver are assigned and if using a dvd player check its settings to make sure it is outputting bitstream.

Also make sure that the speaker configuration in the receiver is correct. If you inadvertantly set it so that the receiver thinks there are only two speakers connected, then none of the matrix surrounds modes will be available, for example.

Thanks MDS for the quick reply. I understand that the surround modes are dependent on the audio format. I set my speaker configuration to 5.1.

For instance, when I play BD movie from PS3 via LPCM - I dont know why but I dont get Neural, Dolby, DTS etc. modes. May be that has to do something with material??

In other instance, when I play some audio/video from my HTPC the same happens - I dont find those surround modes.

Its only when I play comcast HD I occasionally see those modes.

I am just using 7 channel stereo mode with out knowing what to do!!

It depends on the signal. It is easy to troubleshoot if you have cable/satellite TV. Tune it to a channel that offers stereo, you should see the so call 'missing' modes and tune to a channel that offers 5.1 they will be 'missing'. If that's what you are experiencing then there is no trouble and your AVR is doing what it is supposed to do.

I tried regular channels, most of them in Dolby Digital and I get to see DTS Neo and Dolby PL II and Neural, Matrix are still missing. When I turn on HD channels with DD 5.1, DTS Neo, Dolby PLII go away.

Did you meant only upon receiving Stereo input - those surround modes come into picture? I just set my HTPC to send only stereo signal (previously 5.1) and I can only see DTS Neo and Dolby PLII.

That is normal. If you play a BR disc that has PCM Stereo on it, you will get the Neural & Matrix back.

If you have a disc that has both PCM Stereo and Multi-channel such as DD5.1/DTS5.1, press the MENU button on your RC-1070 (the small remote) to display the surround mode menu while playing the disc in PCM stereo you will see the Neural, DTS NEO:6, Dolby PLIIx modes. Now select the multi channel mode available on the disc and you will see those modes disappear from the surround mode menu. You will see this regardless of whether you player is selected to LPCM or bitstream. If you have a FAT then you can choose to take my words for it or go and buy a slim or any other player that can bitstream.

I know Denon manuals are not easy to read, but you may want to re-read p.43,44 and 75-80 as AVRaT suggested, for more details. For example, the manual will tell you which modes are turned on and off by speaker configurations. One last point, you should always see 'MATRIX' on the surround mode menu even in . If not, something is wrong.

Not at all, I meant regardless of LPCM or bitstream you should see those modes (Neural, DD PLIIx etc.) if you feed the AVR with a stereo (2 channel) signal, but if you have the FAT then you have to take my word for it because the FAT cannot bitstream via HDMI so you won't be able to see it for yourself in bitstream but you should see all those surround modes in LPCM via HDMI.

I am saying you should see 'MATRIX' whether the signal is stereo or mult channel.

I think your unit is fine but if you still have doubt that something is messed up, then just reset the unit to factory default settings and go from there. What is your FW version, have you updated it to the latest version?
