Denon 3910 SACD Subwoofer Out Issue

Just purchased a Denon 3910, and I'm having an issue - subwoofer output from the 6.1 analog out to a known-good Marantz 6200 6.1 input, using G cables (verified with a Sony SACD player connected to the Marantz)

I've tried setting the speaker sizes to both Small and Large, and made sure the Subwoofer is set On, but no luck. I'll admit that there may be some other settings I've missed, and the manual is not the most clearly written.

Any ideas here? Hate to return it if I'm being dumb here.

Early testing of the DVD playback portion (Xmen X2) to an Onyx 50" Plasma has been extremely impressive. BTW, subwoofer output via digital coax for either DTS or DD is fine.

Thanks in advance for any help

thrang,

Do you mean you get no subwoofer output with any discs? What have you tried? Does your player have separate speaker setup for SACD, or DVD-A?

If you are in Direct Mode, the player may not do any bass management. No sub output for CDs, and many SACDs don't have anything on the sub channel.

I tried...

two different multi-channel SACDs - one from Peter Gabriel and a Joe Satriani

So what would be the "correct way" to redirect bass information to the sub with the 3910 if they don't have dedicated subwoofer channels (though I must admit I'm a bit confused by this - I thought multichannel SACD's were mixed with discrete channels in mind...)

Thanks for the help

FWIW, I don't sense any bass coming from the sats - it appears as though the bass is being directed away from those speakers - just nothing from the sub

Perhaps I'm overlooking something silly....

My setup is a Denon 5803a and a Denon 3910. When I listen to SACD, my input selector is set to multi-channel analog in. I get a subwoofer output with this setup. I'm not familiar with Marantz how the setup is being done. It seems straight forward to me when you have multichannel SACD and you input that to a multichannel receiver, you're supposed to hear the sound from your speakers. Are you sure the SACD is multichannel? because some of them are just stereo.

Direct. 6.1 Input select on Marantz

Well, the Marantz features a direct access button to switch to the 6.1 analog input - I don't see other settings for tuning this (the receiver's general speaker settings are already correct - subwoofer on, small speakers for the SATs...)

The titles are multi-channel - I do hear LCR and surround information, just no bass...

Also, what are the settings on your 3910 re: audio?

Thanks

Just off the top of my head there is an option to increase sub output by 10db in the speaker setup in the 3910. I believe its under the Audio section. I wish I could be a little more specific but won't be able to until the morning.

Hope this helps.

All ok..

Beleive it or not, I had a cable go bad on me and that was the source of the problem, (along with the need to boost the sub as the previous poster noted).

What's frustrating is that I had been testing the 3910 with a DVD, and I had no issues. I changed the disc, and no subwoofer. Go figure. It was the RCA end at the sub that cuts in and out when moved.

I would imagine most in this forum have their own moments when the most unexpected thing bites you in the rear, but still, sorry for clogging up the forum wth this.

Thanks

So the bass output is good through the dig out but not through the 6 analogs out?

No, see my previous post - an ill-timed failure of a cable had me chasing my tail....

You likely just helped someone else who will someday Google this very issue and find the solution...

Subwoofer output with 3910

I had an interesting issue that was somewhat similar. I have a Denon 3910 with a Denon 3805 receiver. I have the 2-channel output from the 3910 plugged into the CD input on the 3805. I also have the multi-channel outputs from the 3910 to the 3805 (and Denon link for DVD-A). I have a Velodyne subwoofer and I was getting almost NO bass at all, even with subwoofer volume turned all the way up. I called Crutchfield and Velodyne, and both agreed the subwoofer was defective. I returned it and got a new one.

Turns out the woofer was not defective. The new one didn't work either, causing me to tinker with the cables a bit. Instead of plugging the 2-channel output into the CD-in on the receiver I plugged them into the DVD-in, and all of a sudden the bass was back. Is that unusual? Why doesn't it work when plugged into the CD-in?
