I have been looking to purchase a new receiver to replace my existing equipment. I came across a new Denon 3805 for $ 800 from a local Best Buy. My question would this a good buy or should I spend my money on one of the newer models as I realize that this model is a few years old.

The Denon seems to have gotten favorable reviews and the price seems to be attractive. I realize that it has now been replaced by the 3806 which has more features, etc. but at a higher price.

Thanks for all and I enjoy the forum.

I bought a 3805 about a year ago for $800, and have seen them for around $700 on line (Dakmart sells refurbs with a factory warranty). If you don't care about HDMI switching, there really isn't much difference between the 3805 and 3806.

I agree - the 3805 will still be a viable receiver for some time to come and that is a decent price for it, as long as it is brand new. You may even find it for less online. If you do not need HDMI switching, don't use the auto calibration option, or don't have XM radio, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the two. That is exactly the case for me, so I do not feel the need to upgrade my 3805 for some time to come. It truly is a great receiver and in fact is the best selling receiver in Denon's history.

I too have and like the 3805. Magnolia HIFI had them on sale for <$700 last week. I pruchased b-stock from ubid ($770 I think) over a year ago and have had no issues.

I got a floor model 3805 (minus remote) for $600. Love the receiver, couldn't be happier.

That's great, and not a big deal about the remote. I didn't particularly like it anyway. My Harmony is much better.

In my book $800 for a 3805 is NOT a very good deal.
I bought one almost 2 years ago for less than $800 and the (Denon Authorized) dealer threw in the set-up mic free.
I doubt you'll get a good deal from BB, but I'd wager you can pick one up from a local shop for $600 or so.
Make a few phone calls.

These are probably the two best deals going on receivers right now:

Ubid is an authorized dealer. I bought my Denon for around $750 over a year ago from this site, and had issues with my remote. Denon as sent me two remotes so far, even thought the warranty had lapsed. I can't say enough about Denon customer service.

The Yammy 2500 is a very close competitor of the 3805, and is priced at an obvious advantage over the Denon. MacManNM just picked one up a few weeks ago. He loves it.

Yep, didn't care about the remote. Bought a harmony at the same time and just downloaded all the codes. Works great.

Thanks all

Thanks all for the information. I got Best Buy down to $ 720 for the 3805 and I think that I am going to go for it. Brand new in the box.
