I just learned that I can get both for around the same price (~380).
which one is recommended. room size 13x 19, to be used in 3.1 setup (likely with emotiva sub 10, 3x nht superzeros )

Number/type of inputs is fine for my purpose on both.
I am looking for

- better sound overall
- calibration software
- video upscaling

Vx31's network capability is definitely a plus but am I compromising on others ?

The vsx-31 is similar to the 1020.

Of the two, I'd get the 1911 for the Audyssey room correction. However, I find Denons a bit harder to setup and use and Pioneer MCACC allows for 6 eq presets which is nice. And I like Pioneers manuals and remotes better. Video processing should be about a wash.

On the down side, Pioneer only allows one crossover setting for all speaker groups but this isn't a problem for you if you get those three NHT's.

Down-load both manuals and give them each a good read. If the Pioneer had features I'd actually use that the Denon didn't then maybe I'd get the 31 (or 1020). Otherwise I'd go with the 1911.

Whichever you get, if you don't buy from an authorized dealer then the warranty may not be honored.

The Denon AVR-1911 for $375 brings a big full equipment with it: in addition to the 7 stages, offers a HighBit video processing and direct iPod connectivity and full test information including processing, sound, image, connection, setup& configuration etc.

I'd go with the Denon as I prefer Audyssey to MCACC.
