Denon 1906 - Sub setting help needed!

Hi Everyone!

I recently connected my Denon 1906 to a pair of Mission M34is and a BostonAcoustics PV350 subwoofer. The Missions are working fine but the subwoofer doesn't seem to be working when I play music or a DVD.

During the speaker setup stage I can clearly hear the subwoofer rumble with the test tone but it doesn't contribute when I switch over to CD/DVD.

I have used a cable to directly plug the sub to the Pre-Out of the amp as suggested in the manual. Could I have used the wrong type of cable? The manual suggests an RCA cable but I am unsure if I am using one. However, if this is the case, why is the sub active during the test tone? Also, the manual suggests setting the subs crossover freq to "bypass" when using an RCA cable - which I did; to no effect.

Can anyone please shed some light on whether I have a wiring issue (if yes, why is the sub active during the test tone?) or whether I need to activate an option in the amp that allows me to use the sub, thereby making the setup a 2.1 model. My current requirement is only to have the 2 Missions and the sub working together for listening to music.

I have connected a simple CD+DVD player to the CD input option of the amp to act as my source.

I'm guessing you haven't properly configured your receiver. You probably have your speakers set to "large" in the setup menu. This will route all frequencies to your 2 main speakers. Set them to "small" and set your crossover frequency - now the subwoofer will reproduce the frequencies below your crossover setting (80 Hz is common, but depends on where your mains roll off).

Procede to page 45 of your user manual and follow the steps.

Tried it - no joy. Still getting the test tone rumble but no sub contribution. Fronts are set to small and all other speakers are off. Subwoofer is on and crossover freq is at default of 80Hz. Anything else that could be wrong?

It's working!

The volume had to be turned all the way up while the manual suggests setting it to 10 o'clock!

Damn manuals!

Right then. I'm off to listen to my first ever high-end sound setup!

In the amp, the menu in the sound section should enable you to adjust speaker levels. That would include the ability to adjust the sub level.

Once you have accessed the speaker level adjustments settings, it would be best to have:

- A SPL meter, preferably the analog model, and
- An AVIA calibration DVD.

In the meantime, set your sub level in the receiver to its maximum level and adjust other speakers as best as you can to balance the sound.

At 50W and only down to 45 Hz, the BA doesn't contribute anything the Missions can't handle down to 44Hz. When things are set up properly, you shouldn't even be aware the sub is present.
