Definitive Technology speakers

Anyone has any opinions on the Definitive Technology speakers? I heard them side by side with some Boston Acoustic towers and Monitor Audio towers, the Definitive Tech towers were audibly below par compared to the other 2 brands. The Definitive Tech towers sounded very muddy in comparison.

This could be because the Definitive Tech speakers have active subs built in, and I didn't check the sub volume setting. But still, I was just so totally unimpresed by this brand.

Try them in another room.

Seriously.

I have never condeemed a speaker on a single listening session.

Room acoustics and set up distances are that important.

What was your source material? I find Def Techs to be good performers with movies because of their dynamics, volume, and presentation, but not so good with music for some of the same reasons.

I just listened to Deftechs a couple days ago next to Paradigm. The sub woofer had a fairly tight sound, although not as good as several separate subs I've heard. On the treble side of things I think the term muddy fits. I didn't have my usual reference discs with me so the salesman happily whipped out his Huey Lewis CD. At about $700.00 per speaker I thought for music reproduction they were vastly over priced. Strictly for movies however the thought of skipping a $300.00 to $1000.00 subwoofer purchase my be tempting to some.

I have a complete setup of Definite Technology speakers, but specifically stayed away from all their units with built in subs. On the other hand I have heard many of the ones with built in subs fully hooked up in an acoustically treated theater in a home and was not disappointed with the sound at all.

For the money, the ones without built in subs I think definitely are a better way to go. They very much are considered a movie watchers speaker instead of a music listeners speaker. Since I watch 95% movies/HD then I am very happy with them and they have performed flawlessly for me for a little over a year.

2 BP-30 mains
1 CLR 2000 center
2 BPX surrounds
1 PF15TL+ sub

I am not thrilled with the PF15TL+ sub I want to note. I am replacing it with a Velodyne HGS which simply blows it away.

Otherwise, Velodyne really gives you a lot of bang for the buck since they aren't putting pretty wood all over their cabinetry and charging you through the a$$ for the wood. Instead, the simple acoustically transparent cloth (sock) covers the speaker and leaves it working just as well for less cash.

Good deal on good speakers in many instances.

I heard the speakers in a store demo room. The source was the Titanic soundtrack. I didn't use a DVD movie as a source, as I was shopping for speakers for my stereo setup.
