Definitive Technology C/L/R 2500 V.S. C/L/R 2000

I have a Definitive Technology C/L/R 2500 as my center channel, BP-30 speakers as my L/R mains and a Velodyne DD10 (1250 watts rms, 3000 watts peak) rear sub.

Since I already have a hearty sub, it's rumored if I replace my C/L/R 2500 with a C/L/R 2000 (that happens to have the same 6 1/2 inch drivers as my BP-30 speakers), I'll get improved center channel dialogue quality. Furthermore, I'm led to believe I really don't need the sub in the C/L/R 2500, so the C/L/R 2000 (with it's larger, and now size matched drivers) will be allowed to focus more on dialoge quality and not be forced to work as a sub too.

What does the audio community think about that proposal?

As in the past, I appreciate everyone's help.

Don't you already have a thread going on this? Multiple threads does not mean you will get more help. Probably less actually.

Have you experimented with placement? Have you listen to both center channels side by side and noticed the difference? No need to spend money unless there is a clear cut difference. Most receivers have a center channel EQ, have you used that?

My bet is the room or the setup is the problem.

I definitely approve that you should match the 6.5" midrange/upper bass drivers of your BP30 with your CLR speaker. The built-in subwoofer in the CLR2500 is nice, but matching the 6.5" drivers are more important IMO.

The subwoofer in the center speaker is for lower bass music, not for dialogue, since the human bass voice is around 60-80 Hz. It is nice, but not that significant.

Actually, it's more around 100-120Hz. Anything lower is artificial.

You should get CLR3000

See if you like CLR3000 it may be a match for you. If you are ready to replace then I can buy your 2000 for my other setup.

I went from a CLR 2002 to a CLR 3000 and the difference was huge, but I think most of the improvement in sound is from the powered sub, and not from the larger 6.5" drivers.

Sheepstar is correct ;)

The following vocal range classifications are typically used in classical music (from highest to lowest):

Soprano (240 - 1170 Hz)
Mezzo-soprano (220 - 900 Hz)
Contralto (130 - 700 Hz)
Tenor (130 - 440 Hz)
Baritone (110 - 350 Hz)
Bass (80 - 330 Hz)

I went with a CLR3000 which is not a perfect size/driver match for my 7002 fronts, but I love the sound and am extremely happy. The CLR has 6 1/2' and the fronts 5 1/4" however the timbre is excellent still!

I mainly watch DVDs and Tv and clear vocal was very important to me! i really like the powered sub for the lower end of the center channel.

However, lately I have found the Sirrus music channels ( from DishNetwork) provide excellent sounding audio as well as some audio CDs .

I think there a lot of theories, just like in any field.

One theory is to match all the drivers on the speakers.

But in reality, as you and GlocksRock have stated, the driver-size matching is not critical at all.

The CLR3000 is certainly one of the best speakers period, as confirmed independantly by Tom Nousaine/Sound & Vision Magazine.

I bet if we matched the CLR3000 with any system out there, it would sound great.:D

They say the Center channel gets > 50% of all the movie soundtrack.

I have to strongly agree with AcuDefTechGuy about CLR3000

Actually, the CLR3000 is so good you could probably just connect it and no other speakers and 80% of the people would be pleased.

I have to strongly agree with AcuDefTechGuy about CLR3000; the CLR3000 is awesome.

And the center channel does seem to receive most of the voice and vocal from TV and DVD sources, so a good center channel is very important if you watch a lot of video!
