They're really targeted for different purposes. The Gem's are more like traditional speakers, while the SM's are just what their name implies; studio monitors. The latter are primarily intended for "perfect" sound reproduction, with a flat and virtually uncolored sound. True studio monitors lack any type of sound signature, and are often an acquired taste. I'm not saying you shouldn't consider them, but it would probably be a good idea to audition them first. Not everyone likes sound reproduced with no bias.
