OK, please go easy on me, I'm just a noob!

After reading many threads here, a noob can get easily intimidated. My 5.1 Rec Room has a HT with Def Techs and I want In Walls for my FAMILY ROOM 7.1 HT. Sub does not need to be in wall. Room is 28 x 13. I'm not sure which model's I should get or be considering. Also, since this is my first 7.1 system, do the rear surrounds need to match front & side surrounds? I've also decided upon Yamaha RX-V1800 and Sammy HL61A750. TIA

Def Tech in-wall

It is best if the fronts and center match to obtain the best timbre. Wit def tech you can match the speakers sizes 4 1/2, 5 1/4 or 6 1/2. Even this is not extremely critical if they don't match.

The sub and the surround speakers do not have to match each other or the fronts/center.

Some of the best sounding subs are SVS or Hsu.

Now for Def Tech in wall. i have UIW BP/A in the ceiling for my 4 surrounds and they sound very good. However, the other in-wall Def Tech speakers would sound good also.

Here is a link: http://www.definitivetech.com/loudspeakers/inwall_/inwall_inceiling_.html

Good Luck ;)

You're not a fan of Def Tech Bipolar's?
Oh, I think he is.

I'm a fan of DefTech Bipolars too.

You don't really "need" to match anything, but it is "best" to match everything.:D

I would match the driver size of all my speakers, but I'm anal-retentive and obsessive-compulsive too.:D

LOL! Any specific In-Wall Def Tech model #'s you can recommend to me?

Is there a budget involved? I'm assuming you'll be facing the short wall and the room is somewhat enclosed? Minimally, I'd prefer UIW-75s for the front three, but there may be an issue using it for the center unless the stud bay it's going into was built for it. You could then use the 65 for the center as an option. UIW-BPs for side surrounds and UIW-55s for rears. I'd lean toward an AV123 MFW-15 sub, but there's a back-order depending on finish.

Rat, yes, facing short wall. Sliding doors to the rear, (other short wall), with vertical blinds. Budget? <$2,000 would make my wife happy, less than $3,000 will make me happy.. I was planning on placing the Center Speaker inside the TV stand - directly beneath the TV.

Ok, add the CLR2002 for the center and you'll be in between $2-3K.

UIW-75s - $800
CLR2002 - $530
UIW-BPs - $600
UIW-55s - $360
Subtotal - $2290
MFW-15 - $700
Total - $2990

You should be able to get the DTs for 10%-15% off at least.

Bi-polars are great

You're not a fan of Def Tech Bipolar's?
Sorry , I didn't reply quickly , I was out of pocket most of this weekend.

I didn't mean to imply I didn't like bi-polars. Actually that is what I have for the fronts and surrounds. I was trying to imply that there are less expensive alternatives that also sound good.

If it is possible for you to audition the bi-polar verus non I would recommend auditioning. The most improtant point is that you like the sound because they will be your speakers ;)

Good Luck :)

Good stuff thanks! Where can they be found for 10-15% off please?

Also, you recommend the MFW-15 over Def Tech's Sub's? I'll look, (listen), into them thx x2.

If not the CLR2002, which would YOU recommend?

You can get you best deals by going to Def Tech store and telling them all the items you want buy. They will usually give you a 10-15% discount.

Besides the AV123 sub, I would look at the SVS and Hsu subs, they are the best recommended subs. specifically at $429 SVS PB10-NSD or Hsu STF -1 $299

First, check digitalcraze.com.
They claim to be DefTech Authorized, but I've heard they may not be. They seemed nice enough when I talked to them.

Then you can get Abt Electronics to price-match digitalcraze.

If you have Ultimate Electronics or any other DefTech dealers near you, they should be able to price-match digitalcraze.

Good luck.

I got 30% off every single DefTech speaker I've gotten from my store.:D

To help with a reco, what is your concern with the CLR2002? I do like DT subs for the most part and you can see by my sig. that I own a SuperCube I. But for the money, you get more performance by purchasing a sub from one of the ID (internet direct) companies.

No concerns at all with the CLR2002. If I had more $$ to spend would you still reco the CLR2002 or a different one. That was my point. Thanks!

You mentioned putting the center into the TV stand. From that standpoint I would not recommend one of DTs other centers since they have an internal powered bass driver that may cause sound issues. Would I otherwise? I don't think so. I tend to be rather frugal and think that the upper centers are an unnecessary extravagance and prefer to keep people within their budget whenever possible. Besides, with one of the subs I mentioned, you'll have all the bass you need. BTW, how far will you be sitting from the TV?

Great info, thanks so much. Seating will be ~ 10-12 feet away from TV.
